Vigo-Galicia quality
I am not taking part in any student exchange programme in Vigo; I have been living here since 23 years and that is my current age. I love talking about my city because, from my point of view, it is the best city to live.
The first aspect and, what is more, a very important aspect for the students is the party and that is exactly the best of Vigo. There are a great number of places to go out in Vigo. For those who like modern and current music, beautiful people… “el Arenal” is the most suitable area to go out. There are lots of pubs (ones bigger than others) and most of them are nice and friendly. However, if you want to go in some pub there you cannot wear trainers, cap or something like that. Boys might have to pay to go in some pubs. Furthermore, you will find the “Wines area” (la zona de Vinos), the old part of the city. Not a long time ago, it was the best area to go out, but nowadays it is not the favourite area to go out. However, if you decide to go there, you will find enough people to have a funny time and listen rock music, low and calm music; you will be able to play table football and drink something peacefully. The most alternative area is “Churruca”, where you will find reggae and rock pubs, concert halls and some pubs with current, techno or salsa music. Finally, the “Samil area” (la zona de Samil) or also called “the beach”. Nowadays there are four discos there: “Cloe” (it is a nice place, but there are not a lot of people), “Publik” (it is one of the biggest discos in Vigo; the music depends on the time but you usually will be able to listen dance and house music), “Cachamba” (it is a Latin American and salsa music disco, you will be able to learn to dance salsa) and “Nglobe” (from my point of view, it is the disco with the best music in Vigo: house and dance music; it is a quite big disco located just opposite the beach and with a very nice atmosphere). We cannot forget the “botellón” areas, where you can drink before going in some pub or disco (“Nadador”, “Berbes”, “Castro”, “Joaquín Loriga”), but you should know that “botellón” is forbidden in some areas because of the neighbours. In conclusion, there are many things to do at night in Vigo, but if you get bored, you can go to nearby Baiona and Sanxenxo, very tourist places where you will find a lot of party in summer, especially in Sanxenxo, where the best discos of Galicia are concentrated.
With regard to the climate, I really like the weather of Vigo, but obviously it depends on the person. We are in the North of Spain and it usually rains, but it doesn’t rain so much as the forecast says. It only rains when necessary. For instance, this year it didn’t stopped raining for a whole month, but now the weather is beautifully sunny. The temperatures are soft: it is not so cold, but it is not so hot. Generally speaking, the weather is nice in Vigo, it is sunny in summer and it is a bit chilly in winter.
With regard to the prices, there is no difference between prices in the rest of Spain and prices in Vigo. Renting a flat is not cheap, you only have to be a patient person and look for a flat carefully. You can also stay at a student residence. It will be better if you don’t live in the centre because renting a flat is more expensive; if you live in the centre the “party areas” are really near, that is the only advantage.
The transport in Vigo is not very good. There is not underground and, from my point of view, it is necessary in a city like Vigo. The buses work quite well and the taxis are quite expensive. The traffic is something common in Vigo, but moving by car is the best option. You can also go on foot; it is a city with a lot of slopes, so you can do sport easily.
With regard to the city fiesta, you will be able to enjoy the “Reconquista” and, of course, the university parties (St. Pepe and St. Teleco). It is also important “la Arribada de Baiona”, the Sanxenxo and Portonovo Easter and summer carnivals like “St. Juan” in Panxon, the water party in Villagarcía, the wine party in “La Guardia”… However, in Vigo you can do a lot of things: there are five shopping centres, almost all of them with cinema, shops, gyms, theatres… “Caixanova” cultural centre (where you can enjoy several plays, musicals, concerts…). If you like football, you can go to “Balaidos”, the stadium of “Celta de Vigo” football team. Although now it is not a good time for “Celta de Vigo” football team, I hope it will play in Premier Division again when you come to Vigo.
Places to visit near Vigo: Cíes Islands, St. Simón Island, la Toja, Baiona, Sanxenxo and Portonovo, Cangas, Santiago…
Things to see in Vigo: the beaches (the best). There are lots of Kilometres of coast with all kind of beaches, from wild beaches to tourist beaches with a seafront where you can find lots of bars. There are beaches where you can practice water sports like surfing. It is also really beautiful the centre of the city, the old quarter, the marina, “el Castro”, “Castrelos”, the great number of mountains to spend a nice evening or to do a barbecue with your friends…
Vigo is a very safe city and it is quite big (over 300,000 inhabitants). You can go for a walk throughout its streets peacefully because nothing is going to happen to you. For me, Vigo is a city with the best of big cities and the best of small cities.
As you can read, I really like my city and if you are thinking about coming here to do your Erasmus or Seneca programme, it will be a wonderful experience. Of course, don’t forget, the best of Vigo: its inhabitants (los vigueses).
