21 things I love about the UK
Hello everyone!
Yesterday, I made a list about everything I don't like about the UK and explained them. Today, to compensate, I am creating a list of things that I love about this country.
Let's start!
Like Hugh Grant said in "Love Actually": the UK is the country of Shakespeare, the Beatles, and Harry Potter (PS: at this point in "Love Actually", Hugh is only referring to England, not the whole of the UK). These three English references (a play-write, band and book series) simply eclipse all the bad: the lack of window shutters, the weird plug sockets and the bad weather.
Even so, the list goes on:
1. I love that the pedestrian crossings have "LOOK RIGHT" or "LOOK LEFT" on them.
2. It is really easy to find student jobs.
There is always a demand for an au pair and lots of parents are interested in them speaking Spanish (or any foreign language) so that the kids can pick up a new language and another culture. Furthermore, there are jobs like working in a supermarket as a clerk which fits in perfectly with student hours as well. You choose if you have to go to university in the mornings or the afternoons, and the job adapts around you, not you around your job. I remember in Aberystwyth, the famous shop Starbucks needed a barista to help prepare coffees.
3. Kettles!
In Spain we have tea pots, but nothing like the ones in the UK. They have ones that heat water in seconds (in comparison to ours) and if you need to heat water for a cup of tea, the water is done in less than 10 seconds. I have no idea who invented these, but I admire them.
4. Nightlife hours
It starts at 8:00 and it doesn't stop until 3:00 or 4:00.
5. The bathrooms and toilets are separate.
It is like this in the majority of houses and places, I know it happens in Spain too, but it is less usual.
6. Punctuality.
English people (or British, so nobody gets offended) are very punctual, they know how to manage their time well. In Spain, it is the contrary and I don't like it at all. For those who know me, you'll know what I mean. Just so you know, if one day you have your first date with a foreign person, don't be five minutes late.
7. The language.
Its practically universal: its easy, useful, not confusing, business language and an international one. I like the different accents - Welsh is my favourite. I like word games, knowing English helps you to understand how to improve your own humour.
8. The patience they have with foreigners.
If you do not understand something, they will find the easiest way to explain it to you and repeat it back to you. People always say that English people are rude, but I didn't see it this way.
9. I love that the majority of museums and galleries are free.
10. I like tea
11. I like the offers on transport that students get.
There are loads of discounts you can get with your student card, it is quite cheap.
12. I like the repetition
13. I like that they like beer
14. I like the red phone boxes
Even if, in reality, I have never seen anyone using them.
15. I like that they respect queues and that they don't lose their patience.
There are queues for everything.
16. Life on trains
Last summer I was in London and the thing that I liked the best about British life was the life that they lead on the metro or the trains. People do their make-up, they work, they eat breakfast, all on public transport in the mornings. Apart from being a stressful style of life, it is strange to watch what we usually do in our own homes, they do it on the trains.
17. I love takeaways
God. The coffees are so good and as well, so are the cafés (they aren't takeaway), but there are so many different types of cakes and cookies to have with them. In Aber, I always asked for carrot cake with loads of icing sugar on top - amazing.
18. Second hand shops
There are thousands of shops with clothes that are quite new. it is cool to think that the clothes have had another life. Furthermore, a lot of the second hand shops give the money they recieve to charity.
19. At university there are loads of days off
Just like how Monday and Tuesday are so busy, we have Wednesday and Fridays off. I prefer it that way. So I have enough time to concentrate on the jobs that I have to do. This depends on each course and there will be all types of different experiences, but for me it was like that and I worked much more effectively for it.
20. The famous carpets
They're cosy. But for God's sake, they are so unnecessary in the bathroom.
21. I love English Breakfast!
But only with a hangover. Get up at seven in the morning and start cooking sausages and eggs and go to uni with a smell of fried food...
And that is all for today's post! The short and good, double good. I think this will be the motto of this blog from time to time, especially with recipes. I hope you liked it!
