The best place to eat traditional Saint-Petersburg donuts

Published by flag- Nika Logvinova — 7 years ago

This place might not look fancy, however, it has its own history. It was opened back in 1958 and still exists. Situated nor far from Nevskiy prospect (the main street of Saint-Petersburg), people come here on purpose, you may not find many foreign tourists. Every time I come here, I hear stories from middle-aged people how they were coming to this place to eat Pyshkis when they were students, 20 or 30 years ago. The taste of Pyshkies remained the same thorugh the history.

So what is Pyshkis? It looks and tastes like a donut, we eat it with sugar powder. You won't find Pyshkies in any other city in Russia, it is considered to be trully Saint-Petersburg dish. How many to take? People usually take around 8, depends how hungry you are :) Do not forget that donuts are boiled in hot oil that's why it is VERY fat-saturated. Those who are taking care of their figures, try to avoid eating a lot of them.

An interesting tradition is the way how we eat them. Instead of using only our hands or a fork (if there is anyone who eats donuts with a fork), we use piece of water proof paper which is usually cut by workers. You can see loads of them on each table and you take as much as you need.

I also suggest to take a drink which is called "coffee with milk". In fact, it is not really coffee as you are used to drink. It's very low coffeine-contained and comes from the Soviet Union times.

What else you can take in the cafe? They serve some other international drinks plus you can buy chocolate from the local chocolate manufacturer Krupskaya, other sweets and pies. However, my strong advice is to take Pyshkies since it is their speciality.

The prices are very cheap. One pyshka costs 12 roubles (around 30 euro cents), coffee with milk is about the same price.

So, if you want to make a flight to the Soviet Union history and eat something very Saint-Petersburg traditional, come to this place, you won't regret it!
