Rome, the beautiful city

The city of Rome is situated in the central-western part of Italy and other than being the main town of the Lazio region, it is also the capital of Italy. It spans from the river Tevere and it is made up of the presence of the famous seven hills: Palantine, Aventine, Capitol, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquilino and Celio. Amongst the hills, in particular we remember "Pincho" hill which is characterised by a big and beautiful park, from the top of which you can see all of Rome (if you go there don't miss it, it is a beautiful view! ).

Within the city there is the Vatican State or Vatican City, which is recognised as a true and proper state, made up of an legitimate monarchy, with a Pope, Benedetto 14th. The official language is Latin.

Amongst the symbols that characterise Rome we have in particular the coat-of-arms with the sign S. P. Q. R (that in the Latin language means: Senatus Populus Que Romanus, or rather something like: the senate and the Roman people) which refers to the presence of the Patrician and Plebeian classes during the period in which Rome was governed by the Roman Empire.

Another symbol of the city is the Capitoline wolf, a statue that represents a wolf breast-feeding Romolo and Remo who, according to the legend, were the twin children of Queen Silvia, a vestal virgin raped by the god Mars, who were thrown into the river Tevere in a basket by their grandfather and were subsequently found by a wolf that took care of them.

Another important symbol is, of course, the great Colosseum, which was originally known as the Flavian Amphitheater and is found in the centre of the city. The view of this grand monument is particularly exciting from via dei Fori Imperiali (Imperial Forums street). It leaves you almost speechless! It is almost as if all traits of modernism became an echo of the past.

In this city there are different churches and one of the most famous ones is of course that of Saint Peter, as well as the basilica of Saint Paul outside the Vatican walls.

Capitol Square is also very important, where there is Capitol Palace, which is the town hall of Rome. The Senatorial Palace and the Capitol Museums are situated here. There is also Quirinal Palace, which is situated on Quirinal hill and is the official residence of the President of the Republic.

Amongst the other important monuments and the most beautiful, we have Trevi Fountain. There are also different bridges, among which there is: Milvio Bridge, Garabaldi Bridge (on the river) and Flaminio Bridge. In the city there are also different obelisks that date back to the period of the Roman Empire, and which were transported from Egypt in conquest.

Like in the whole of Italy, they speak Italian here, but like in all of Italy they also have a particular way of speaking here, or rather they speak the Roman dialect. Unlike many other Italian dialects, it is quite similar to Italian. More than any other, you can determine a kind of accent or speech, instead of an actual dialect because, essentially, it is always Italian but with some different words and a quite particular accent.

The climate is Mediterranean. Normally, the summer is very hot and humid with a lack of rain, whilst the winter is more or less rainy and at times it can be very cold, but normally it is rather mild.

In Rome there are many universities. Amongst the more well known there is of course: Università degli studi di Roma “La Sapienza” ( o Roma 1), Università degli studi di Tor Vergata (o Roma 2) and Università degli studi di Roma Tre. If you are passionate about cinema you cannot miss the famous studios of Cinecittà, where some of the major Italian and overseas directors work, for example, Fellini. And just for this reason Rome is considered as one of the world capitals of cinema!

The city is made up of more than thirty neighbourhoods. For those who love football (soccer) instead, you can go to the football stadium to see the much loved A. S. Roma. The stadium is known by the name Stadio Olimpico (Olympic Stadium) and is found in the sports complex of the Foro Italico, north of the city!

In reality, there is a sort of "rivalry" between the Rome and Lazio football teams, with someone being from one team and also from the other, so at times this can lead to playful bickering in deciding which team is better.

The places that the students normally choose to go out are more or less in the Tevere and Tiburtina areas. Usually, students go out in the San Lorenzo neighbourhood in the Tiburtina area, or in Piazza Trilussa in Trastevere, or in Piazza Campo dei Fiori in the historic centre. Among the most popular local bars there is "45 Giri" (where you usually go on Thursdays), which is a disco bar where they do aperitif and where you can dance. There is also "Doppio 00" bar where they do aperitif or Sunday morning brunch and this bar is found in the area of Università di Roma Tre. Usually, students go out from Thursday to Saturday evenings and on Wednesdays they go to the cinema because they have student discount, and so the tickets are half price!

Rome is also defined at times as the city of love since the name of the city is the word for love in Italian spelt backwards: Roma - amor! There are so many things that together make Rome a city worth making the most of.

So, if you still haven't been you most definitely have to visit it!
