Living in Munich, Germany by Alicia
What is it like to live in Munich? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Munich is a great city with lots of green in between. I like it here, but since I live on one end of the city I don't really go to the city centre that often.
What is the student lifestyle like in Munich?
Students have lots of opportunities in Munich. But if your campus and accommodation are not in the centre you might not see too many of them, except when you go to student parties. But most often the different subjects rather keep to themselves.
How much does it cost to live in Munich?
It's more expensive than in other German cities, but compared to more expensive countries like Sweden, Great Britain or Ireland, it's ok. The alcohol is pretty cheap compared to other countries though.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Munich? Is there any advice you can give?
Yes, it is very difficult. Start early enough or write the Studentenwerk München. They always have a few rooms or apartments for students from abroad.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Bavarian food is pretty hearty. If you like sausages, steak, bread or potato dumplings or sauerkraut, you're in the right place. But there are also a lot of vegetarian, vegan, glutenfree and organic food choices when you eat out.
What places would you recommend visiting in Munich?
The English Garden and the Isar are great places in the summer. There are also lots of museums, cinemas and other free time activity choices. It always depends on what you like, the opportunities are nearly endless.
Is it good to eat out in Munich? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It's good and there are many different kinds of places to go. But it's always quite expensive. Sausalitos Schwabing is a great cocktail house with Mexican food. Fürstenegger has affordable traditional Bavarian food, but it's quite far from the centre. At the Stachus Passagen there are lots of fast food choices.
Is the nightlife good in Munich? Where is good to go?
The nightlife is great and again with lots of different opportunities. There are night buses and trams that will get you home every hour (or half-hour on weekends). Many clubs are close to the city centre, like Karlsplatz/Stachus or Sendlinger Tor.
What advice would you give future students heading to Munich?
Before looking for a flat, look where your faculty is. The campus is spread far across the city and you might end up taking about an hour to get to your lectures.
