Experience in Munich, Germany by Maria
What is it like to live in Munich? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Munich is a great place to live. It combines a sense of peace and relaxation the countryside can offer you, with the luxury and comfort of a big modern city.
Although it is the third largest city in Germany, the very well organised public transportation system gives easy access to every corner, while you can have a more relaxing ride in the historical city centre by using the tram.
Whatever your preferences are, Munich will fulfil all your wishes!
What is the student lifestyle like in Munich?
Students from all over the world choose Munich as a place to study. Having two of the best universities in Europe (LMU, TUM), studying in Munich will be a unique experience from every aspect.
The international character and the high academic ranking and reputation of its institutions are only two of the main advantages this city offers to its students. Being placed in the "heart” of Europe, it gives also unlimited opportunities for short and cheap trips around, exploring the beauties of Bavaria.
How much does it cost to live in Munich?
It is true that Munich is one of the most expensive cities in Germany.
If you want to rent a small apartment in the city you must have a budget of at least 650-700€ monthly for rent and other housekeeping expenses. As a student, you may have the chance to book a shared apartment or a room in the student accommodation, which costs around 350-400€.
The transportation is also quite expensive, depending on how far you want to travel monthly, but in average should not cost you more than 60-70€ monthly.
Grocery stores are much cheaper comparing to other European countries, while you can also enjoy an affordable drink out with friends if you like beer.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Munich? Is there any advice you can give?
Accommodation is one of the biggest problems people face when deciding to move to Munich. It is generally difficult to find a place that fulfils all your criteria, while it is advisable to start the search a few months before you move in.
A common solution is to rent a room in a house and share most of the facilities with other flatmates. In the suburbs it is maybe easier to find a place to rent, but the prices are not much cheaper. In general, be patient, look at local newspapers and avoid rental agencies if possible.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food is super delicious, but super unhealthy too!
If you like meat, you will be satisfied in any case. Try all the different kinds of sausages you can, and don’t forget the amazing hot soups, especially during the winter. It’s a must.
My favourite one is the Goulash soup, and except the local restaurants, you can also find it in Viktualenmarkt, a street market right in the city centre (Marienplatz).
What places would you recommend visiting in Munich?
Depending on how long you are going to stay, Munich has many attractions to discover.
Starting from the most basics and touristic ones, like Marienplatz, Deutsches Museum, Residenz Palace and Olympiapark, don’t forget to have a walk in its unlimited parks, lakes and along the Isar river.
For those who prefer more relaxing weekends, the big shopping centres, like Olympiaeinkaufzentrum and PEP can also offer you a sense of luxury and entertainment.
Is it good to eat out in Munich? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Although eating out on a regular base is an expensive habit in Munich, food choices will never disappoint you. Traditional Bavarian delicacies can be found all around the city, however the best of them are those in the local street markets like Viktualenmarkt, or in the Christmas markets, if you are lucky enough to stay in Munich in December. There are also many restaurants with traditional dishes from all around the world, with those from Turkey, Greece, and Asia having the majority.
Is the nightlife good in Munich? Where is good to go?
Nightlife in Munich is always fun. Most of the bars and pubs are close to the city centre, between Lehel, Karlsplatz and Sendliger Tor. So you can easily choose the one that better fits your style. Traditional beer gardens are always a good choice during summer months.
What advice would you give future students heading to Munich?
Munich is one of my beloved cities. Not only because of the opportunities it offers, but also because of the people, atmosphere and feeling of safety you have walking on its streets.
So don’t hesitate to give it a try and spend some of your time studying there.
You may don’t want to leave again!
