Erasmus Experience in Munich, Germany by fadil
Why did you choose to go to Munich, Germany?
The astounding achievements achieved by Technical University of Munich really caught my attention. Thus, I choose to move in to Munich and study there.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship last till the end of 2020. I got around 970Euros per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Munich?
In general, its fun, challenging and exhausting. Commuting for 40-50 mins everyday is a norm. As a muslim, you dont have much options to eat in Mensa. They dont provide any halal food. So I buy coffee and chocolate to pump up my energy during the day.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Munich to other students?
Regarding the former, for sure. The latter, well I'll tell them to think twice or more. lol.
Studying isn't the only issue at TUM. You have to possess an astounding amount of determination to commute everyday. Despite the reliable public transport, it's still exhausting to commute to the Uni, especially for the students living 40-50 mins from the Uni(you'll sacrifice a lot of time). Regarding food? Well to muslim students, we dont really have much options at the MENSA(Vegetarian food is the only one because we only eat halal food). Snacks like chocolates are the way to go. Living in Munich as a Student is also a problem lol. Finding a place in Munich is unfathomably dreadful. As a student, your financial background is weak in comparison to the working class people. To find a place to stay, you literally have to compete with someone, who have a very stable financial background. It's gonna take a lot of time, money and energy. And once you get one, you'll be lucky to find one in a 30min radius from the Uni. A piece of advice.... good luck mate!
What is the food like?
The vegetarian food is fine. But not scrumptious.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Munich?
Yup. Blood, sweat and tears. Average rent price is around 500Euros, it is expensive.
How much does it cost to live in Munich?
Should be aorund 800 euros. Rent is 500. Semester ticket around 200 (you only buy it once for a semester). And a few hundreds for groceries. Books? Dont mention it. You'll burn a hole in your pocket.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Thankfully some of my professors speak in standard german with little accent, so it's easy to understand. Those who dont? Well, just pray to god that He'll give you a german tongue and ear
