What is it like to live in Mumbai? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

The fast paced life makes living in Mumbai a unique experience. Famous for being the city that never sleep, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Mumbai and got my first taste of independence here.

The city is very friendly and easily accommodates new people. However, space is a luxury not everyone can afford. There are housing options to suit every budget, but the size of most houses is smaller than average.

What is the student lifestyle like in Mumbai?

Being one of the education hubs in India, there are educational institutions scattered all over the city. The city is very student friendly and there are plenty of activities to enhance your academic experience in Mumbai. Cultural festivals organised by colleges, also known as 'college fests' are excellent opportunities to show case and build on your talents. There is also a thriving night life in areas like South Bombay, Andheri and Bandra.

How much does it cost to live in Mumbai?

As compared to the rest of India, the cost of living in Mumbai is very high and most of your budget will probably be used up in paying for rent. Food, transport and other amenities however are comparable to the rest of India in price and far superior in quality and variety.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Mumbai? Is there any advice you can give?

There are many housing options In Mumbai for students but you must start looking well in advance if you want to find the perfect home. Mumbai is very spread out and location and housing prices are closely linked. Rent tends to be higher in business and commercial areas and lower in the suburbs. Hostels, paying guest accommodations and rented flats are some of the most popular options for students. Most colleges in Mumbai do not have their own hostels and students almost always need to make their own arrangements.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Mumbai is a cultural confluence of people and so all kinds of food is easily available here. It is most famous for street food including savoury dishes locally known as 'chaat'. Pav bhaji (bread and a mashed vegetable preperation) is another favourite in the city and is available in all areas throughout the day and night. From fancy high end restaurants to affordable food carts, there are options to suit all budgets. However, hygine can be a problem and it is best to consult locals about which places are hygienic.

What places would you recommend visiting in Mumbai?

Mumbai has a variety of architectural structures, mostly dating back to the 1800s built by the British. The bazaars are another tourist attraction as are the beaches, particularly Marine Drive. The street shopping experience in Mumbai is unforgettable and will help you master your bargaining skills.

Is it good to eat out in Mumbai? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Eating out in Mumbai is something all students love. The street food offered on beache sides known as a chowpatty is the best place to have chaat and pav bhaji as well as Indianised versions of pizza and chinese food. For continental food, restaurants in Colaba and Bandra are the best places.

What advice would you give future students heading to Mumbai?

Be prepared to travel a lot by public transport since things are very far in Mumbai and if you want to avoid the horrendous traffic and high charges of taxis, embracing trains (also called the 'local') and public buses is the only option. It may seem confusing at first, but there are several mobile apps to help with that.
