Erasmus in Montpellier (France): disappointing and boring

I did not enjoy this city at all. For me, it was way too small and was lacking this vibe of a lively city where people are busy and actually doing something.

You can easily visit all the important monuments in one day. And if you're staying there for a semester, or for a year, it quickly becomes just unbearably boring.

I did not find one place when you can actually drink good coffee there. The cafes are so small, it's uncomfortable to sit there, you don't have any privacy.

The small streets did not seem charming to me, rather scary. The canteen was open in weird hours where I wasn't even hungry.

It's just a city that lacks character, it does not have personality, energy, unlike Lyon or Marseille. I have visited many cities already, so it just seemed so unoriginal.

The architecture and climate are nice, but it just wasn't enough to make my stay special. The beach isn't that close, it took me over an hour to get there and it was very disappointing.

I think that people also shape the way of thinking about the city, and my Erasmus coordinator was so rude to me he managed to make me cry. That situation is completely unacceptable.

I am writing this review to warn you that it's not all that perfect as other students describe it. I read the reviews here and the reality turned out to be so much different.

Overall, I don't recommend France at all for an exchange - bureaucracy can kill you and you won't have time to enjoy your stay.

Sad to agree with you as I know this city well because I was born here. It's sad because I think it became like that, but first, Montpellier had a southern identity, but it become lost. The energy of the city has been reduced by the number of people who move like students, or the standardization of the codes of a city that wants to be a metropolis. There is no more dynamism. And quiet strength, hope it will change !

lol wtf. Maybe your experience was bad but erasmus in france is amazing. I was in strasbourg and i had the best time of my life. Yeah bureaucracy sucks in france but there are other things that make up for it, like the people you meet and stay in your heart forever. So, Montepellier may not be the best idea for erasmus but other cities in france are worth it.
