Basílica de Guadalupe
Mexico´s Pilgrim Hotspot
The mysticism which surrounds the site of the Basilica de Guadalupe is simply incredible. It is here in the valley where the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared cloaked before Diego.
The Basilica is one of the largest buildings in Latin America, and is also a pilgrimage hotspot for locals and foreigners alike. Surrounding it are temples dedicated to María, in which masses are offered on a regular basis.
The cloak of Our Lady of Guadalupe can be found on show within the Basilica. Climbing the hill where she is said to have appeared for the first time and a temple can be found is a very interesting experience.
Thousands of visitors flock to this site every year, with the busiest days being the weekends and Catholic festivals days. Numerous shops can be found in the surrounding area which sell religious souvenirs.
The site features a museum, and there is also the option of booking a guided tour. The majority of information pertaining to the site can be found online on the website. One of my recommendations for visiting is to come accompanied if you are new to the city, since the site is very large and can be confusing to navigate.
You can reach the Basilica de Guadalupe by metro or taxi. It´s actually easier to reach the site using these methods of transport than by taking your own car. Although the site is far out from the city, it´s worth visiting to see the amount of pilgrims who gather there.
