Experience in Lisbon, Portugal by Marília
What is it like to live in Lisbon? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I don't exactly line in the city of Lisbon, but in the suburbs. But I really like studying there, there are a lot of things to see, has good public transportation, good shops, everything students need is available near the colleges and the weather is great.
What is the student lifestyle like in Lisbon?
It depends which college you attend, but the portuguese students are all for integration and helping each other out, you'll make friends in college who will be there for you forever.
How much does it cost to live in Lisbon?
Compared to Barcelona (where I'm currently studying) and Paris, it's much cheaper. Accomodation can be a little expensive though.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Lisbon? Is there any advice you can give?
I've never had to find accomodation in Lisbon for myself, but it's considered expensive by my classmates. Just try to find an area that's not in the center of the city, because those areas are never quiet nor good to live in. And visit the flats first, take some days and go around Lisbon visiting rooms you are interested in.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The portuguese food is really good, you have to try clams, codfish, "cozido à portuguesa and a lot of seafood. My favourite dishes are usually the ones with seafood involved, like pork Alentejo style (which has clams), seafood rice, monkfish rice or just roasted chicken.
What places would you recommend visiting in Lisbon?
Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Castelo de Belém, Chiado, go out to Bairro Alto, etc.
Is it good to eat out in Lisbon? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, it is. Maybe near Tagus River, there are a lot of good restaurants there.
Is the nightlife good in Lisbon? Where is good to go?
I'm not a fan, but there are a lot of places to go. Bairro Alto, Santos, Cais do Sodré, all of those places have many bars, discos and there are always a lot of people there.
What advice would you give future students heading to Lisbon?
Go to everywhere you can, there are a lot of secrets and hidden places in Lisbon that are truly wonderful, you just need to have an open mind about it.
