Erasmus Experience in Lisbon, Portugal by Vlad
Why did you choose to go to Lisbon, Portugal?
I didn't have a particular reason. I just did
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
3 months, and I get 700 €/month
What is the student lifestyle like in Lisbon?
There are A LOT of Erasmus students in Lisbon, from all over the world, so the athmosphere is very friendly and lively. Also, there are a lot of groups you can join for a small one time fee (5 or 10 €) and then you get access to all of their parties and trips.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Lisbon to other students?
Definetely yes!
What is the food like?
I didn't eat at the university, so I can't say anything about that. I really liked the pasteis de nata, I ate octopus and squid and a lot of fish and they were all soooo good! The cheesecake in Costa da Caparica, in a little coffee shop (it is in the metro station with that water fountain or the one with the McDonald's, I can't remember) is fenomenal!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Lisbon?
I stayed in the university dorms (Frausto da Silva Residence) and I payed 190 €/month for a single room. I shared the bathroom with the two boys staying in the room next to mine. I had to cross the river to get to Lisbon, but we were a lot of students there, so we leaved in groups to go to parties. The mechanics department of the Nova University is very, very close to the dorms, that is why I chose to stay there.
How much does it cost to live in Lisbon?
That depends on what you want to do. The prices are not high compared to France, for example. You don't need a lot of money if you can cook for yourself so you don't have to eat out all the time.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I didn't go to any class because I had to do a project there. The professor spoke English very well, so I didn't have to learn portuguese, but I still caught a few words inevitably. :)
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Lisbon from your city?
I live in Bucharest, so the easiest way to get there is by plane. I don't know whether it is the most economical way or not. Lisbon is to far away to go there by bus or something else, so I didn't look for anything else besides flights.
