Erasmus Experience in Lisbon, Portugal by Jerneja
Why did you choose to go to Lisbon, Portugal?
I decided to go to Lisbon because I wanted to live in this magical city for a short period of time and be a part of this fascinating and multicultural existence. This historical capital is simply beautiful and beyond words to have a proper description.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I had erasmus scholarship. Its amount was around 270eur per month. I had also some savings and financial support from my family(300eur/month). Erasmus money is enough to cover costs for accommodation.
What is the student lifestyle like in Lisbon?
Students on law faculty in Lisbon are very helpful and not so individualistic oriented. They are learning together in groups, playing bilyard game or cards and having fun together in coffe places and restaurants at university. If you want, you can also order a cerveja(beer) after hard exam. :) Student lifestyle is very nice in every single way.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Lisbon to other students?
Without any doubts, I recommend the city and the University of Lisbon. I am positive that every student will forever remember this wonderful experience.
What is the food like?
The food is great specially if you like mediterranean cuisine.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Lisbon?
I found my room on internet for 250eur/month (all costs included) and made reservation one month before I arrived in the city. I had to pay a month's rent in advance. It was a big mistake. The room I got was not even on the pictures in the owner advertisement. I think it is much better that you stay in a hostel for a week and then look for a place to stay.
How much does it cost to live in Lisbon?
If you are not a shopaholic and know how to wisely spend money, you can survive with 300-400eur/month(you have to exclude erasmus scholarship which you will spend for accommodation).
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I attended a Portuguese language course for 4months on University. The price was 50eur. The language is not difficult to understand, if you already know a little bit of Spanish or Italian.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Lisbon from your city?
The best way for me to travel from my city to Lisbon is by plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Lisbon?
Bairro Alto is definitely the epicenter of the city's bar scene and where most of the nighttime action takes place. You can find a lot of discos, bars, Fado houses, and nightclubs, all for different tastes and interests and located throughout the city. Lux and Urban Beach are fashionable and are some of the top disco clubs in Lisbon.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
There are so many cultural attractions that is hard to do a short list(Alfama, Belem, Miradoura de Graca, Igreja do Carmo, Gulbenkian Museum, Parque Eduardo VII.. ). :)
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Lisbon in the future?
Erasmus exchange in my opinion should be obligatory for every student! :)The international friends and memories will last a lifetime. Do not hesitate and just go to Lisbon! ;)
