Erasmus Experience in Lisbon, Portugal by Ayşe
Why did you choose to go to Lisbon, Portugal?
Because I have heard many good things about the city and its people.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I'm not an Erasmus student. Just a master student in Instituto Superior d'Agronomia.
What is the student lifestyle like in Lisbon?
There is always a party any day of the week if you want to join. You can also find calm and quiet places just to enjoy the other side of Lisbon.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Lisbon to other students?
Absolutely.
What is the food like?
The food is simple and good. The pastry stuff are delicious as well.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Lisbon?
Thanks to the international office, I did not struggle to find a student residence. It is inexpensive.
How much does it cost to live in Lisbon?
450 - 500 € is my approximate monthly expense.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
There is no course provided for my master. I manage somehow even though in small shops it is hard to communicate without Portuguese.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Lisbon from your city?
There is no cheap way to come from my city to IStanbul. It is more or less the same price with any airlines.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Lisbon?
Cais de Sodré, Bairro alto, Alfama
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Sintra
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Lisbon in the future?
- If you are a student, the best is to rent a flat with local open people. So that you can discover the city much faster with the tips they give.
- To make some economy, before you arrive, ask your school if they have any agreement with Carris (public transport) for a discount, otherwise, once you arrive in Lisbon, first thing you should do is to apply a monthly card that cost around 36 €. OTherwise one way travel cost quite expensive if you need to take bus and metro in one day.
- I am told by locals to be careful around Alfama for robbing. Watch your bag and wallet.
-And go for a walk in the street of Lisbon whenever you are free. Always beautiful things to see.
