Esperienza Erasmus a Liegi, Belgio
Why did you choose to go to Liège, Belgium?
I chose Belgium because a friend of mine was in Liège in 2007 and he told me good things about this city. I have opted for this city because I study Political Science and Liege University has a good reputation in this field. Moreover, considering that I was not very fluent in French, I decided for Liège.
How long did the scholarship last? How much money did you perceive?
My Erasmus scholarship was 9 months long. I monthly received 600 from my home university.
How is the student life in Liège?
The student life in Liege is amazing, university traditions go from Bapteme, to Saint Nicolas and Saint Torè, along the carré streets, but not only. There are parties, there are people on the streets, there is life.
Would you recommend the city and Liege university to other students?
Of course.
How is the traditional Belgian food?
You can buy anything in a supermarket and there are a lot of Italian products However, Belgian food is very tasty, even though there is no much variety.
Les frites are the traditional national dish. Then I had the opportunity to eat tartiflette and raclette. I tried the tasteful sauce au lapin and I ate boulettes à la ligesoise, that I love.
How did you like your place?
It was very nice. I was sharing a flat with two Belgians. I had a big TV, a living room and a nice room. And it was in the city center.
How much did you pay per month? How much is the cost of living?
Rents are not very expensive . In the city center, houses are bigger and are more expensive, but usually the average rent price is between 250 and 300 euros per month. The cost of living is not high, except for groceries.
What about the language? Did you attend a course?
I can fluently speak French. I know all of its variations, thanks to my flat mates. I attended a course in the evening organized by the university, which allowed me to meet many people. It was fun
What is the cheapest way to get to Liege from your town?
I take a flight from Alghero to Eindhoven, then I take a train to Liège.
Which places would you recommend to go out in Liège?
I didn’t love the carré very much, but there you can find nice bars such as the point the vue , a place for Erasmus students, the Far West, the Cubar … All of them are nice.
I personally like other places such as pot au lait, Casa Nicaragua and Casa Ponton.
What about food? Can you tell us more about your favorite places?
I didn’t have a favorite place… Maybe the friterie you find around the city. My favorite places are parks, especially Boverie park, very nice and neat, but I also adore la cittadelle and the Belvedere, a spot where you can see the whole city.
What about cultural places?
Museums. Museum of contemporary art and the various galleries around the city, that promote young talents.
Any advice you would like to give to future students at Liège University
Live, live and live the city, enjoy it every day, love every corner of it, and try to gently discover it. At the beginning it may seem a very cold city, but once you understand it, it is a world full of people, experiences, friends, fun night and good moments.
