Erasmus Experience in Liege, Belgium by Kira
Why did you choose to go to Liege, Belgium?
I chose Liege mainly because of the fact that it is in the French-speaking part of Belgium, since I wanted to improve my French. Apart from that, another friend of mine was also applying for Liege so we thought it would be a nice idea if we went together.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I stayed in Liege for five months, although there was the possibility of staying up to one year. The scholarship was around 400 euros per month, plus 40 euros per month because I come from a low-income family.
What is the student lifestyle like in Liege?
In general, there is a large students community in Liege. Usually local students are not very open to Erasmus students (speaking from my experience and from the experience of some other friends). But on the other hand Erasmus students are not very open to local students either, that is because of the different expectation professors have from Erasmus students. Meaning, Erasmus students don't have to work as hard for the academic semester (or year) as permanent students'.
University of Liege
Would you recommend the city and the University of Liege to other students?
I would definitely recommend it. The city is a very lively city and the academic level of the professors at the University was quite high.
What is the food like?
My roommate was a pretty awesome cook, therefore we barely ate out. From my limited experience it wasn't great. However, it was not bad and Liege offers a diverse choice of local and non-local tastes.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Liege?
I find the accommodation through an office that helps students on that matter. And it was a small apartment in the centre for 600 Euros all included, which we split y two with my roommate.
How much does it cost to live in Liege?
600-800 Euros. But that was two years ago so I am guessing prices must have risen.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Well, it's French! And yes, there are language courses available. You have to take a test that evaluates your level in French language. Based on the results you attend a class with other students who have a similar level to yours.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Liege from your city?
By plane, from the Charleroi Airport. Charleroi is one hour from Liege by train and there are many cheap Ryanair flights.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Liege?
At the Carré! It is exactly what it sounds like. A point in the city centre where most of the night clubs and bars are located. One of my personal favorites was Pot au lait, a bit outside the Carré, but a very interesting bar.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Liege?
Unfortunately, I don't remember any restaurants.
