Erasmus Experience in Liege, Belgium by Hector
Why did you choose to go to Liege, Belgium?
We stayed there before just visiting a friend of mine and I decided to spend my Erasmus Grant there
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The scholarship lasted around 9 months or more if you have to take the exams in August. Our University gave us a decent amount of money.
What is the student lifestyle like in Liege?
The student lifestyle is very funny and warm over there, I remember that we haven't got any kind of problem of having friends there.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Liege to other students?
Yes, In fact, the ULG is one of the most prestigious universities in an average of universities in the world so I highly recommend this University. Liege is one of the most historical sources in Europe, not the main but one of them.
What is the food like?
Food in Liege is quite good. I recommend Des Frites and des Gauffres Belges apart from that the "Chipolata" and "Moules" are the best food I can mention apart from other kind of food that I haven't got the chance of taste.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Liege?
Unfortunately, the accomodation in Lige is expensive, people usually recommend the City Living which is a residence or one of the residences over there, my case was a flat that we rented but if you don't want to share rooms and those kind of things I recommend the Kots at Kotaliege.com for example they are cheaper and exclusively for students.
How much does it cost to live in Liege?
Hard question.... errrrm.... we can say that depend on the lifestyle you choose you are going to spend more or less money, parties are expensive so, come on and be imaginative.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Of course it is, French is one of the easiest language to learn and the ULG recommend their French courses at the Institut Superieur de Langues Vivants, good teachers and good environment.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Liege from your city?
The plane is the commonest way of travelling to Liege once in Liege trains are going to be your best friends.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Liege?
We used to say that Le carré is the only street that is wet without raining... party is assured there.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Liege?
Whatever is going to be the brasserie you are going to eat in, is going to be an excellent choice.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The university in itself is a historical emblem, apart from that the cathedral and the Citadelle are the best choices you can take.... but be sure of having any plans about festivities and carnivals and those kind of things in order to assist to each of the fabulous festivities around there.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Liege in the future?
Enjoy the live there, don't be shy and forget about legends and urban legends coming around there, be happy and let live.
