Erasmus Experience in Liege, Belgium by Ester
Why did you choose to go to Liege, Bélgica?
One of the main reasons why I decided to go to Liège was its situation in the middle of Europe what allows you to visit a lot of countries spending less money. From Liege takes about 15 min to Maastricht, 1'30 to Luxemburg, 2 hours to Paris... The better and the cheaper way to travel in and arround Belgium is the train.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My cholarship was about 9 months and I received more or less 600 euros per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Liege?
Liège is an university city so it is imposible to be bored. There are " a party zone" called "le carre" where every student gather doesnt matter which day of the week....besides not everything is party and beer, there are a lot of cultural activities, such as theater, concerts, conferences, exhibitions....
Would you recommend the city and the University of Liege to other students?
Of course, I recommend it! The city is great with a big international atmosphere!
Besides the university is one of the most prestigious in Belgium. At the university you are going to be treated like another belgian so that means that doesnt matter if you are an erasmus student you must work even harder if you want to pass your year succesfully.
Conclusion: if you want to spend an Erasmus without studying and pass the year only drinking beer and partying don't go to Liege!
What is the food like?
All kind of beers, all kind of chocolates, all kind of waffles, "boulettes á la liegoise", frites.... more frites.... all kind of sauces for frites....
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Liege?
I was pretty sure I wanted to live in a student residence so I hadnt any problem to found it.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The language use in Liège is french. For those who has no idea of the language or want to improve their knowledges the university offers some free courses that even allows you to gain some credits for your studies.
Courses in the university of Liege are most of them in french but there are also some in english so if you dont manage well with french dont worry a lot...
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Liege?
If you want to party, two words : "Le carre".
If you want to take some beers or a coffee in a relaxing and unique place you have to go to "Le pot au lait", its ornaments are incredible!
