Erasmus Experience in Liege, Belgium by Anthony
Why did you choose to go to Liege, Belgium?
It was part of my Erasmus program to go through Liege.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
Under my current Erasmus program scholarship, the program is 2 years. It has two mobility routes: It starts off from Bordeaux, France or Southampton, UK then everyone meets up in Bilbao, Spain for the 2nd semester followed by Liege, Belgium or Southampton, UK for their 3rd semester. If you started off in Southampton, UK, your mobility will take you to Bilbao, Spain followed by Liege, Belgium. However, starting your mobility in Bordeaux, France can lead you to either Liege or Southampton.
What is the student lifestyle like in Liege?
Liege is a student city; so many Erasmus students are here. There are so many things to do depending on what your likes and preferences are. You will make many friends and some awesome lifetime memories.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Liege to other students?
Yes, I definitely would.
What is the food like?
It's good, there is everything for everyone. I especially like the famous Belgian waffles near the Cathedral in the centre.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Liege?
Student accommodation can be a problem for a short stay. It also all depends on where your studies will be, whether in the centre or Sart Tilman campus. But planning early really helps. Accomodation can range anywhere from 240 euros per month to 700 euros depending on whether you are looking for just a kot or an apartment. Most students share apartments and owners demand at least 2 months rent deposit plus the rent. So keep that in mind. In addition, there is a free service for students to check their rental contracts so as to make sure their rights are protected. The university can help you locate the place.
How much does it cost to live in Liege?
Depends on you actually and your lifestyle.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
English and French language courses are offered by the University. I think the intensive course before the semester really begins are important if you want to learn. Courses are taught in either English or French depending on the program.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Liege from your city?
I think the most economical way is to fly to Brussels International Aiport/Zaventum and take the train to Liege. The train can be taken right from the airport.
Also, depending on how far or near you are from Belgium, there are buses (Eurolines and Flixbus) that are really cheap.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Liege?
Famous places... Pot au Lait and "le carré" (where all the bars and pubs and clubs are if you are into the party mood).
