Erasmus Experience in Liege, Belgium by Ali
Why did you choose to go to Liege, Belgium?
Because I study English/Italian back home and I speak fluently French. So, I thought being in Liege will improve both French and Italian (since there are a lot of Italians living in Liege).
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship is for six months. I receive 1000 euros.
What is the student lifestyle like in Liege?
It is perfect. There aren't a lot of activities like other cities. But, people and professors are very nice and helpful and there are tons of centers to help students to adjust and to get over any struggle.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Liege to other students?
Indeed, specially if you have intentions to go around Europe and Belgium then Liège is the place! It is pretty easy to go to Germany, Netherlands and France from here.
What is the food like?
I could not find a certain cuisine. Fries are delicious I recommend a place called Chez Victor near Place Cathedrale. Liege is known for its waffles as well (Try Pollux, they have hot waffles filled with chocolate). You can find Indian, Italian, Turkish and Lebanese food all around the city.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Liege?
It was not easy to find accommodation because I am staying for six months only. Owners usually prefer to rent a "kot" or a studio for the whole year. So I almost pay the double for my own studio.
*Kot is a term used in Belgium and it means a small studio for students.
How much does it cost to live in Liege?
It depends on the person. In general it is not a very expensive city and there are a lot of special offers for the students.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes there are plenty of languages courses available at ULg. People speak a little English it is recommended to have some French basics, if not then it is okay because there are courses that you can take during your stay.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Liege from your city?
I had to fly to Vienna then take another flight from Vienna to Brussels then I came to Liege by taxi (trains are cheaper but I arrived late at night and all trains were gone).
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Liege?
Le Carré!
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Liege?
I recommend Mange et Dis Merci, Chez Victor and all small Italian restaurants have amazing food.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Theatre de Liège.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Liege in the future?
I advise them to enjoy their stay and to travel as much as they can around Belgium and the nearby countries, specially those who are coming out of the European Union.
