Experience in Leuven, Belgium by Fabiano
What is it like to live in Leuven? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I totally recommend! Leuven is a vibrant city, there's no nationality you can't find there, the university is great. The city literally lives around the university and because of it, as a student you have access to many facilities and privileges. Belgians are a Party people, so, try to rent a room far from the bars; this is the only warning I have.
What is the student lifestyle like in Leuven?
University provides a lot, like buddy program, an international office in each faculty, bus card for free public transport the whole academic year for 20 euros, also sports card, cultural card... and on the top of it: it's a top 50 Worlds university for less than a thousand Euros/year.
But still, you'll find some troublesome websites that will not be in English. Besides, some professors are so good that can be arrogant, but I think it is the same worldwide.
It is not perfect, but I couldn't have made a better choice for my life, and I'm sure you'll love it.
How much does it cost to live in Leuven?
I know some people living there with 500 euros, but it is crazy. You should think around minimal 800 all included, except the tuitions.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Leuven? Is there any advice you can give?
If you want very cheap or a very good deal, yes, it is hard. Moreover, they favor local students with subtle strategies, like putting the announce in Dutch or requiring a previous visit a few months early. But still, it's not too hard to find a good place for a fair price.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I have to say it is not a place to eat... but you can find either cheap or Good, not both at the same place.
What places would you recommend visiting in Leuven?
I recommend visiting the city itself, Arenberg Castle and Oude Markt.
Is it good to eat out in Leuven? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Not really.
Is the nightlife good in Leuven? Where is good to go?
Nightlife is cool, especially in spring and autumn, vibrant, colourful and Belgians really know how to enjoy life.
What advice would you give future students heading to Leuven?
Take a time to enjoy Europe, go prepared to enjoy Europe. Leuven is beautiful but the most important is that you'll be only a few hours far from: Paris, London, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Geneva, Berlin and hundreds of small cities that are a real fairytale. So, go prepared to live in Europe, not to live only in Leuven.
