Experience in Enschede, Netherlands by Jurrian

What is it like to live in Enschede? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It's a nice, peaceful city where you can have fun any time of the day, every day. If you're looking for a combination of quietness and party, then this is a great city for you.

What is the student lifestyle like in Enschede?

There are a lot of students and places that offer student discounts. There's surely enough to do!

How much does it cost to live in Enschede?

If you're unlucky, you pay a ton of money. Otherwise, a room could be around 300 euros. Food isn't too expensive compared to other countries and you can drink a lot more beer for the same money than in other cities.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Enschede? Is there any advice you can give?

This year, for some reason it seemed to be more difficult. However, it's much much easier here than in other cities in the Netherlands.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

We live in the Netherlands, our food sucks. However, restaurants are great and there's enough to choose from in Enschede. Especially the so called 'dag-hap' (day-bite) which is a really nice dinner for around 10 euros. It varies per restaurant every week.

What places would you recommend visiting in Enschede?

The outdoors climbing wall at the campus of the university. Otherwise, go cycling around Enschede to Hulsbeek and other villages around.

Is it good to eat out in Enschede? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Yes. I love the italian restaurant Sorentino, but there's something for everyone: argentinian, mexican, dutch, turkish, thai, chinese, japanese, etc.

Is the nightlife good in Enschede? Where is good to go?

It's not huge, but it's fun. Don't go to Aspen Valley, it's balls. For the rest; you can't really go wrong if you walk around the 'Big Market' (around the central church). If you fancy a nice beer go to 'De Vluchte'.

What advice would you give future students heading to Enschede?

Don't fall for suckers who want to make you pay a lot of money. We have laws in NL to protect (student) renters. Don't fall for 'pay to end the contract' or that you don't get your deposit back or that you get evicted because they can't. The only reason to get kicked out is if you set your house on fire on purpose or murdered someone. It's all bluff what they do. Always ask fellow students for advice about this since they will probably know about this.
