Erasmus Experience in Enschede, Netherlands by Raul Tomita
Why did you choose to go to Enschede, Netherlands?
Because it is a quiet place to study and a good place to go partying.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship lasts for 2 years and I don't receive any aid to help me with my living costs.
What is the student lifestyle like in Enschede?
It is challenging since I study and work at the same time.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Enschede to other students?
Of course. For me, it was a great, fresh start that will probably help me a lot in the future as well.
What is the food like?
Very varied, due to the confluence of different cultures in the city. Whatever grocery store (bio, Asian, ordinary, etc. ) you decide to go, you will always find the type of food you are looking for, no matter where you come from.
Was it difficult to find your accommodation in Enschede?
Yes, it was. It was confusing at first, that's why I want to help.
How much does it cost to live in Enschede?
It depends on what you are looking for. A student will probably pay around €600-700 more or less for living and some expenses.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
There are available courses, yes. The language is not that hard to pick up. I speak for myself anyway. I learn Dutch by practicing it in some apps on my phone. Moreover, I have Dutch friends that speak Dutch around me, so I train my ear.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Enschede from your city?
On a bike. It helps to work out your muscles.
Where would you recommend going on a night out in Enschede?
It depends on what music genre you like.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Enschede?
Oh no, I am sorry, but I don't eat out. I love cooking.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
If you start your tour in the center, I am sure it will take at least one day to visit and see everything around.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Enschede in the future?
Sure. Gather as much information as you can about the city and pay close attention to housing and how everything works. Although you will learn everything anyways, it is better to get prepared in advance.
