Experience in Dresden, Germany by Toni
What is it like to live in Dresden? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Dresden is a beautiful city with the best weather you can get in Germany. It is a city at a river and prides itself as a culture city and the Florence of Germany. I like it anyhow.
And you will have fun there!
What is the student lifestyle like in Dresden?
I don't know. I study art, so it will be kinda different to yours, I guess. If it isn't, you can ask me via PM.
How much does it cost to live in Dresden?
I live in a flat with 3 other people Dresden/Pieschen for 200€ with Internet and everything inclusive. It is close enough to the city center and the trams and buses go every 10 minutes.
It is for a German city not a very expensive.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Dresden? Is there any advice you can give?
No I would not say that. The best spot to search for flats is wg-gesucht.de.
I would recommend the districts Pieschen, Neustadt, Leipziger Vorstadt, Johannstadt and maybe Südvorstadt if you'd like to live next to the TU.
If you need furniture try the Junkmarket every Saturday at the riverside or Ebay Kleinanzeigen.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
German cuisine for me, as a German, is not a very interesting but if you like try the Ballhaus Watzke.
Believe it or not Doner is invented in Berlin so it is a kind of German and you should really try it in a German city. I recommend the Kebab House at the Pfotenhauer Straße between the Neubert- and the Herthelstr.
What places would you recommend visiting in Dresden?
For every student there is the Neustadt- a part of the city where the live happens. Bars, cafés, interesting stores and galleries.
I try to don't recommend you usually things that stands in every tourism guide. If you are into contemporary art, go to the Galerie Baer in the Louisenstraße and the Galerie Gebrüder Lehmann in the Görlitzer Straße.
Is it good to eat out in Dresden? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
- Mamaris (Turkish Restaurant in the Louisenstraße): even when it is good, don't buy the Döner. Try some of the real Turkish food.
- Sapori d'Italia (Louisenstraße): Get just the Magerita Pizza! Get just the Magerita Pizza!
- Maru (Korean Restaurant in the Förstereistraße): I love Kimchi... and this place in particular. Maru can be translated to "living room".
Is the nightlife good in Dresden? Where is good to go?
Interesting bars are the Blue Note, the Hebbeda's, Stilbruch, Madness and a lot more. I am not a club-person but the Chemiefabrik is an old Punk-club and now also filled with other music genres. In the Neustadt is now also a Kiezclub but I've never been inside. The higher clubs are the Arteum and the Kraftwerk Mitte.
Or just get a few beers at a late-night-shop and place yourself on a couch at the sidewall and sing the Introsong from 'Friends'.
What advice would you give future students heading to Dresden?
In Dresden they speak the dialect Sächsisch. But not so hard like in Leipzig.
The word 'Nu' means Yes and 'Nö' means No but you'll get it when you're there.
Don't try to get a flat in the area of Prohlis, Gorbitz even when it is very cheap there. Strange people.
