Eva's Erasmus Experience in Dresden, Germany

Why did you choose to go to Dresden, Germany?

It was where I would receive my Erasmus grant.

How long was your grant for? How much money did you receive?

My grant was for six months. I received approximately €400 a month from my Erasmus grant.

How is the student life in Dresden?

The student life is the best I've come across. The University of Dresden has a huge number of campuses and degrees to study. It’s known as the Salamanca of Germany. You’ll come across students of all nationalities. It’s undoubtedly a university city.

Would you recommend Dresden as a city and University to other students?

I would recommend it 100%. The city has loads of student halls where you can meet lots of people, they also have parties for the students every day in the different halls. The ESN Erasmus organises trips and activities for the students.

How is the food?

The food isn’t bad, a lot of butter on everything but it’s good. If you’re a student you’ll probably end up eating at the university restaurant which has everything from Chinese food to spaghetti and salads…a wide variety to suit every taste and all for a more than reasonable price.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Dresden?

No, but you need to organize it well in advance since the halls will fill up quickly, especially the good ones. You can apply online here.

What is the cost of living in Dresden?

The prices are the same as an average Spanish city, for me it cost about €200 a month for my room in halls, with internet included, a shared bathroom between two, and a big shared kitchen between six. The halls were impeccable.

How did you get on with the language? Did you attend a course at the University?

The language is difficult but the university offers free courses suitable for any level. First you will do a test to determine your level and from that they place you in the appropriate class.

What is the most cost-effective way to get to Dresden from your hometown?

The most cost-effective way is to fly to Berlin and from there take one of the many buses that go direct from the airport. (Schönefeld is the airport where all the low cost airlines fly to, and the expensive airlines fly to Tegel).

Where would you recommend for a night out in Dresden?

Any of the bars in the student halls and there are all kinds of bars in Neustadt.

What about going out to eat in Dresden? Can you tell us your favourite places?

I normally ate at university or at home.

What is there in terms of cultural places to visit?

All of the Altstadt (old town) is incredible (the cathedral, the church of our lady, the procession of princes mural, the Zwinger palace…etc etc). The Elbe River is also worth seeing. And you can’t miss out on the Kunsthofpassage in Neustadt.

Any advice for future students in Dresden?

My advice is make the most of this opportunity to get to know this wonderful city and its surroundings.
