Experience in Cluj-Napoca, Romania by Jorge
What is it like to live in Cluj-Napoca? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Obviously, I've only been on Erasmus once, but there's no doubt about it, Cluj-Napoca is, at the very least, one of the three best cities in Europe to go for Erasmus.
CLUJ-NAPOCA FOREVER
What is the student lifestyle in Cluj-Napoca?
The lifestyle is honestly amazing, I think, if I remember correctly, of the city's 300, 000 inhabitants, more than 80, 000 of them are students. It has different student complexes, so there's a lot of atmospheres.
How much does it cost to live in Cluj-Napoca?
It's very cheap. To give some examples, the residence cost around €40, including water, light, heating and Internet bills.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Cluj-Napoca? Do you have any advice?
The university has agreements with a lot of the residences, so you can just fill out the application they give you and then you'll have your accommodation.
What is the food like there? What are some of your favourite dishes?
I was surprised by Romanian food. They don't have a lot of big iconic dishes, but rather they have a diet based on broths and sauces which they combine with a good meat dish.
Where would you recommend to visit in Cluj-Napoca?
La Belvedere, without a doubt. It's a hill with a hotel on it, that has a perfect panoramic view over the city.
There's a bar that is ideal to go for drinks, especially at night. The views are incredible.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Cluj-Napoca?
Cluj-Napoca has nightlife every day of the week. There are some very dodgy clubs and there are a few more casual ones.
Janis La Stuf is the most well-known. All of the Erasmus students end up here (since it's the last place to close, too). Then I would recommend Bamboo, After8 and Phi18.
Do you have any advice for students coming to Cluj-Napoca in the future?
I'll only say that you shouldn't waste a single second of your Erasmus stay. Enjoy it as much as you can, if you don't, you'll regret it later.
Try to go with some savings, although it's a very cheap city, you'll end up spending quite a lot. And if you don't have enough money for your Erasmus, you won't get far, that's for sure. It's a year to spend all of your savings, since you're going to enjoy what you're spending your money on and you'll have the memories for the rest of your life.
