My Erasmus Experience in Bristol, United Kingdom by Margot

Why did you choose to go to Bristol, England?

I chose England to improve my English and I chose Bristol because it's a city with a good art and culture presence. The people are also very nice (they only had good things to say about Bristol to me).

How long's your stay? What financial aid do you receive?

I'm here for a year and I receive 120 euros a month.

What's the student vibe like in Bristol?

Bristol is a city that's full of students and where there are always things to do. Bars and clubs are always open!

Would you recommend the city or university to other students?

I recommend the city however you have to be prepared to work a little bit because Bristol has quite high standards and the teachers expect the students to do a lot of independent work.

What's England's food like?

The typical food isn't great but there are many different restaurants like Italian, Spanish, Japanese and especially Indian.

Did you have any problems finding accommodation in Bristol?

Yes you should really book in advance! It's very difficult to find accommodation in September.

What are living costs like in Bristol?

Accommodation should be around £450 a month and £100 a week on food and general living (like leisure activities).

What's it like learning the language there? Did you take part in a language course organised by the university?

There are English courses for foreign students with the university but living with English people (house sharing or living with a family) is a better way of learning the language.

What's the most economical way to get to Bristol from your home town?

There is a bus (with the company Megabus) or you can catch a flight.

Where do you recommend to go out in Bristol?

I recommend going to The Canteen for a drink and to listen to live music. To go out to clubs, go to Pryzm, Bunker and o2.

And to eat in Bristol? What are your favourite places?

I like to eat at Waterspoon, the burgers are really good. Bon Appetit is a bit expensive but I like it and Zazabar is a help-yourself buffet which offers student discount.

And what cultural places do you recommend going to see?

I recommend going to the museum. I would also advise visiting other cities as the Erasmus Social Network (ESN) enables you to visit places in the United Kingdom for cheap. My favourite trip so far has been visiting Edinburgh in Scotland.

Any advice for future students going to Bristol?

Quit smoking before you go as tobacco is so expensive and get ready for a lot of drinking!
