Erasmus Experience in Bristol, United Kingdom by Pierpaolo
Why did you choose to go to Bristol, United Kingdom?
I only know English, so i thought it would have been better to come here than to a country where they speak another language. They told me that Bristol is the perfect city for a student as it is not too big (like London), but you can still meet a lot of people and have fun in many different ways
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I am staying ten months and I get 310€ per month. Unfortunately the scholarship is not even enough to pay the rent.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bristol?
There are a lot of events and parties for students and at the university there are hundreds of societies (sport, art, language) where you can meet many people. Ideally, you could go out every night in a different place.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Bristol to other students?
Yes, absolutely I’m having a great time. I think that the lectures I'm attending are at a quite high level and all the professors are really good and enthusiastic.
What is the food like?
There are a lot of restaurants and fast food, but it is quite expensive if you want to eat well. There are many supermarkets as well and there are reasonable prices
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Bristol?
No I found my accomodation on a Facebook group. If I went through an agency, I would have to pay one month of rent more as agency fees
How much does it cost to live in Bristol?
The average rent for private accomodation is 450 £ per month, plus 20-30£ per week I spend at the supermarket. On a typical night out with some beers and a club you can spend more or less 15£
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Bristol from your city?
I fly from Italy (either Milan or Venice) and by booking in advance you can find really cheap flights (15-20€)
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Bristol?
SWX, Thekla, Walkabout, Motion and Embargo are some of the usual places we go with the erasmus group to. Near the triangle (which is really close to the UoB) there are many pubs like Wetherspoons or the White Harte
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Bristol?
Cosmo is a really nice "all you can eat" in the triangle and it has various ethnic food. In Gloucester road (which is a little bit far from the centre) there are many types of restaurants: one of the nicest is Atomic Burgers.
