A sip of Slovakia

This was our first stop on our "Eurotrip" which we had organised as an end of exams treat at the end of our first four months of Erasmus. I'm in favours of any place that has a charm which makes it worth visiting and I never trust the comments that say "don't go to this place because there's nothing to see... " I prefer not to make that the case and check the facts for myself because most of the time, the comments are wrong. Although in regards to Slovakia, there was something dubious... there are a lot of people who have told me about their disappointment with Bratislava, yet, I found the opposite. It really surprised me, for sure, I don't think I could stay there for more than 2 or 3 days.

The first night, after doing some touristy things, we decided to go out to have a drink (this is seriously our tradition every night during our Eurotrip). It was a Monday, so I have to say that the city was practically empty, there was only really some men alternating between some of the bars which were open, so we doubted that any sort of pub or club for young people would be open...

Walking through the centre (Stare Mesto), a few meters from St Martin's cathedral, we found somewhere that was open which we decided to go in straight away because we liked the atmosphere and the décor, despite that, it was practically empty (at that time and on a Monday, we didn't go to find anything better).

We went in and each one of us ordered a beer from the menu that I assume was Slovakian, although I was looking for something that was more typical (Zlaty Bazant or Kelt) but after not being able to find anything like that, I went for a different one which I don't remember the name of, and we sat and had a good chat after a long day of travelling from Brussels to Bratislava.

The table next to us was playing a card game - a group of young people whom the waitress soon joined. I decided to go and have a look around the establishment a little because I loved how they had decorated the roof with newspaper clippings and I discovered that on the floor downstairs, after going through some passages which reminded me of typical Spanish wine cellars, they opened up into dance floor where they held parties and small music events, but of course, it was closed at that time.

The lighting was blueish and the menus were arranged like they were sitting on merchants' tables which gave a very pleasant and original atmosphere to the place, and between some laughter, my friends and I commented on the good impression that we had of Bratislava, far from the comments that we had heard about it.

We soon went back to the hostel to relax for the intense day of tourism that awaited us in a few hours.
