Tips for 1 day in Munich
I spent just one day in Munich this past summer, but it was one of the best parts of my long trip through Austria and Germany. I wandered around the city on a Saturday with my family, and we had an amazing time. Here are some tips for how we spent our day in the city!
- Wander. Having just come from several days of museum-strolling and castle-hopping, it was great to get on the streets of Munich and just walk around and curiously look at all the city has to offer. The public transportation system was very easy to use, and once we chose a central place to start (Rathaus-Glockenspiel in Marienplatz), it was easy to wander from there.
- On that note, go to Rathaus-Glockenspiel in Marienplatz! We came out of the underground metro and were met with not just several old and beautiful buildings rising around us, but a vegan festival! Being a vegan, I was super stoked. I'm sure that this square houses other festivals and events all throughout the year, because we spotted other events/performances going on in other squares that same day. We had heard that the great clock on the Rathaus gives a great show twice a day, so we headed up to the top of St. Peter's Church to watch! It was an amazing view from the top of St. Peter's Church and a great place to watch the moving clock.
- Eat at Max Pett. This restaurant has kept us oohing and aahing for months after this one day in Munich! It was some of the best food I have ever eaten, and it gave us a great chance to do some more wandering on our way to/from the restaurant. This restaurant was recommended to us by several people at the vegan festival, and their eyes would light up as the name "Max Pett" would roll of their tongues. Seems like a local favorite!
- Stroll down Sendlinger Strasse. This was a great walking street and housed one of our favorite shops, Lush. We had a great time window-shopping and stopping into a really ornate and old church that was located on this street. History + shopping + wandering = a big win for all!
- Visit the Hofbrauhaus - a beer hall - and experience the comradery of locals and some great beer! We sat at one of the long wooden tables and chatted with an older company across from us. The music was traditional and loud (and live!) and we bought a pretzel and a large beer from one of the wandering servers. This was definitely one of the most German experiences that we had the whole day, and it was great to not only look at Germany as a tourist but experience it alongside the locals.
- Stop in a park/garden, sit on a bench, and read a book. My sister and I were quite done with museums, so when our parents decided to go into one of the royal residences, we walked down the street to a crowded park and grabbed a park bench. It was great to chill and enjoy the lovely weather and sun, as well as to see all the local families enjoying the outdoors.
We loved spending the day in Munich and it was a great way to end our trip through Austria and Germany. I hope that these tips help you, whether you are studying as an Erasmus student in Munich or taking a day trip there from a nearby city.
