I came up out of the metro, riding on the escalator and taking in the world around me as the sunlight came into view. Before I was even able to spot the famous Rathaus, with its moving and entertaining clock and breath-taking architecture, I spotted something else:
VeganMania.
The signs hung high, and booths with white coverings were lined up in the square. I was amazed as I looked around and saw many vegan organizations represented, with their home-baked treats and flyers at the ready, as well as a grand stand for bands and presenters.
I was visiting Munich for the first time, and as a vegan I wasn't quite sure how to deal with the food scene in this city so foreign to me. But as I walked up in surprise to one of the many booths lining the square, I realized that this was the answer.
At one of the booths, a volunteer gladly gave me the Vegan Guide to Munich, a little hand-out with names and locations of vegan restaurants and cafes. We asked what he recommended, and him and others adamantly replied: Max Pett.
So we went. We followed their verbal and written directions down the busy streets of Munich, past cathedrals and stone archways, cuckoo clock stores and girls in traditional dress. On a quiet street lined in trees, we came to it, the vegan restaurant we were looking for.
After getting used to hunting through menus for the few vegan-friendly items, I was overwhelmed with all of the choices at Max Pett. My sister ordered a green smoothie, which our friendly server promised to make herself (she said that she made it better than anyone else). We ordered bruschetta and my mom helped herself to some delicious soup that she had spied on a table on the way in. And I ordered a raw lasagne made with zucchini and cashew cheese, something my dad said he didn't want to try. By the time I was half-way through it, he was taking the rest off of my plate. Just goes to show that Max Pett isn't only a paradise for vegan foodies; it is a paradise for all foodies.
We don't usually order dessert, but the selection at Max Pett was too much to pass over. We ordered an apricot crumble topped with whipped cream and blueberry icecream, as well as a snickers torte. Both of these left us closing our eyes and oohing over each spoonfull. We ate it slowly and savored each bite.
I wish that Max Pett was located near my house; I would eat there almost every day. But, I will settle for visiting it each time I am in Munich. I greatly recommend this restaurant for vegans and non-vegans alike. This foodie paradise should be enjoyed by all.
