Climbing up Old Peter's Steps for a Great View

Published by flag-us Kaelin Priger — 6 years ago

On our first full day in the city of Munich, my family headed via the underground metro to see the famous Rathaus (the old town hall), with its playful, moving clock and gorgeous architecture. Across from the Rathaus is an old church, St. Peter's Church to be exact. It houses a tall tower that can be ascended for observation of the vast city beneath, so we bought tickets and decided to go see what this great view was all about.

As soon as we entered the small door of the tower entrance, we saw stairs. Very narrow stairs. We quickly became experts at rushing up the stairs when no one was coming down, then waiting a bit for the stairs to clear again as groups descended from the tower above. The stairs were not wide enough for double-lane traffic, so this made our ascent a bit difficult. I have read that there are about 300 stairs, so please make sure you are physically able and committed to making this trek before you buy a ticket!

Once we reached the top, we crowded into the line of people walking around the observation deck. Standing between the building and a tall metal fence, we slowly walked around the tower and were able to take in a 360 degree view of Munich, including the impressive Rathaus.

The clock on the Rathaus has moving parts that come into action at 11:00, 12:00, and 17:00. If you time your ascent of the tower of St. Peter's Church just right, you can see the fun, playful clock without having to crane your neck :)

After looking around from our bird's-eye view, we made our way down the steep stairs to the base of the tower and went to enjoy the weekend festival taking place in the square. This part of Munich is alive and vibrant on the weekends, and don't forget to walk to the amazing Max Pett restaurant that isn't too far away!
