Ah... green bean casserole. This is a typical American side dish at the Thanksgiving table. It's also often seen at the dinner table at Christmas. However, Americans tend to like using a lot of processed food, for example Campbell's soups. Almost every casserole recipe, including green been casseroles, use some kind of Campbell's soup. Cream of Mushroom soup is the most typical.

While this is sold in many Nordic countries, it is often REALLY expensive.. if it can be found at all. It's also very unhealthy.. so here is my rendition of Green Bean Casserole sans the processed soup. And, in my opinion, tastes 200% better. This will forever be my Green Bean Casserole recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1/2 or more cup diced shallots
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 cans green beans, drained
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (use a hard cheese like cheddar or a block of hard white cheese)
  • 1 cup fried onions (may substitute with buttery crackers)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Directions

Preheat the oven to 175 degrees celsius. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a pan and then stir in the flour until it's smooth. Cook it for about one minute. Stir in the salt, sugar, onion, and sour cream. Mix in the green beans. Transfer the mixture to an oven safe casserole dish and spread the shredded cheese on top. In a bowl, toss together the fried onions and remaining melted butter. Bake for about 30 minutes or until the cheese is bubbling and golden.
