Frozen Tolma

The introduction

Tolma is a very favoured dish in Georgia and many people just love preparing it and having it as a main dish, however, it’s not that easy to prepare, because it’s pretty time-consuming and people can really get tired of preparing it. Though, it’s so delicious, that they can forget the time-consuming and tiring thing and they can prepare it anytime they want to have some Tolma. It’s especially a main dish on celebration feasts and big occasions.

Nowadays since everything can be bought and there’s not anything, that you can not buy in the supermarkets, there are frozen Tolmas sold in the supermarkets and you can buy them as many of them as you want and prepare them at home. Those ones are already prepared and they just need some water to get cooked.

In this article I want to tell you about this frozen Tolma recipe, which we prepared the other day and we did that a little bit differently, than we usually prepare Tolmas, so, here it is!

Ingredients:

  • Frozen Tolmas, 10 pieces
  • Tomato paste, 50 grams
  • Onions, 2 medium
  • Salt to taste
  • Red ground pepper to taste
  • Coriander, 30 grams
  • Svanetian salt

Preparation process

So, as the tolmas were already prepared, they didn’t need to get seasoned and added some rice and folded in the cabbage leaves. Instead, we could just put them into the saucepan and have them like that.

  1. Put the 10 pieces of Tolmas into the saucepan very close to each other.
  2. I had some water boiled beforehand and added it to the saucepan full of frozen Tolmas, until they were covered with that water.
  3. Usually those frozen tolmas don’t have that special taste, that the newly prepared Tolmas have, so that we decided to have some other things added to the dish, so that it would have a great taste.
  4. We added some salt and ground red pepper , however, not too much salt, because we also added Svanetian salt, which contains salt with other things, too.
  5. We also added the tomato paste, and since the tomato paste has a pretty good taste, we added plenty of it considering the capacity of the saucepan. To be honest, it was kind of small for it to have plenty of juice in it.
  6. After that, I had some onions chopped into very small pieces and added them to the dish. You can also have them cooked a little into a frying pan with some oil and it will get even  a better taste, however, I didn’t want to bother about that and I just added the onions to the dish itself.
  7. Then I washed and chopped the fresh coriander and added them to the dish, too.
  8. They use to put a plate on the Tolmas, so that they will stay into the water and don’t come out, so that I put that kind of plate on the Tolmas, too, and had them cooked like that.
  9. I waited for about an hour after the water boiled in the dish for it to get all prepared and cooked.
  10. After one hour of cooking, I turned the gas off and waited a little bit for the dish to cool down and then it was time to taste the dish!

So , the dish was all prepared and ready and it tasted pretty good , too. Everything was just great with each other and the Tolmas were cooked very welland the stock tasted pretty good, too. So that, I recommend preparing that kind of stuff, because it’s really very easy to prepare these Tolmas this way and it’s not time-consuming or anything else. You can have them cooked in just one hour and have it served with pride.
