English Breakfast experiment
English Breakfast experiment
When I first moved to the UK, I was very much concerned of what I would it eat. A year before I started eating healthily (more or less so) and it was an important thing to attend to. So I started by checking local supermarkets and food they offered. I figured that I can get more fresh exotic fruit and vegetables for a better price.
Let’s start with my favorite fruit: avocado, pineapple, mango.
Here in Britain, if you choose wisely, you can buy them for a very fair price (less than a pound sterling per piece), which was quite a surprise, since in my country of heritage these fruit are much more expensive. Bear with me for a moment, people, as there was a surprise I couldn’t expect to see: the most ridiculously expensive fruit I came across here was…apple!
Now, I am a foodie. Therefore, I couldn’t but try one of the most quintessential British dish, English breakfast. I think it became so popular lately, that you could even find it travelling to the Mediterranean resorts, such as Spain, for instance. English breakfast is everywhere; it is super substantial and tasty. So I decided to conduct an experiment and learn to cook some English breakfast every now and then myself (since it costs around 10 pounds in a decent place, it was much cheaper to cook it at home).
So here is what you need to cook a perfect English breakfast:
2 eggs
Bacon
Asparagus
Sausage
Black pudding
Some mushrooms
Tomatoes
Baked beans (preferably in a rich tomato sauce)
and a slice of bread
I wanted to make it quite an experience so I even cooked it outside on a lovely summer day, using gas stove for camping. The process of cooking is quite simple really: I boiled asparagus, wrapped it in bacon and grilled on an instant barbecue thing, where I also put the sausage, bread and tomatoes; it all soaked up each other’s most admirable smell. Simultaneously I used my small frying pan to fry some mushrooms in a nice virgin olive oil and black pudding (which is now called a superfood, along with the chia seeds).
The last thing I had to do was to cook some eggs, perfectly sunny side up and sprinkle them with some sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.
It was just a masterpiece, that is all I can humbly say… Oh, and probably, one last thing, don’t cook it too often for the benefit of uniqueness and your body shape too!
