Guidlines for Internship in Spain

We are fully emerged in work with the new wave of students experiencing their internship in the Canary Islands. We have also welcomed our two new interns, who will be joining the TJT team until June. Inspired by all the new comers, we decided to dedicate an article to the must – do things before your internship. The journey of an internship abroad is extremely thrilling, but often it can be overwhelming and stressful. TJT team has prepared your 'to – do' list so that you are fully ready to enjoy learning through traveling at its fullest.

1. All the medical things

Going abroad does not mean not being able to go to the doctor. But you should be aware of the health system of the country you are going to, so that you know what is expected of you in terms of paper work. If you are going in Europe, the must – have document is the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Common misunderstanding is that this card covers any type of doctor appointments but the truth is that it will cover any emergency situations. To sum up, you do need a separate insurance policy regarding health and liability when you do your internship abroad. Conduct your research and conusult your hosting company for assistance.

2.Accommodation

Essential part of your preparation is finding a place to live. To avoid the stress of the process, start as early as possible. In case you are looking for a place in Tenerife, the following websites may be helpful:

 A good tip is to call or text the landlords, do not wait for their response on the website. If you get rejections, ask the people to keep your number in case something comes up. What is more, you can look on Airbnb for people who are willing to rent out their apartments for longer period and may be open to negotiating the prices. Tip for the location of your future home: look for the surroundings. Are there all the facilities you need, is there a supermarket and a pharmacy? Sometimes the cheap rent and the distance are not all that matters

3. Financial and Bank Documents

Something that may not come to mind at first is to research the banks and cards situation. Wherever you are going for your internship you will need to be familiar with the whole financial situation in the country.For example, in some countries shops may reject Visa Electron and accept only Visa and Maestro and vice versa. For this reason it would be helpful for you to do your research and not encounter problem, because that will not be fun. Also if you are going to a country with a different currency than yours, it may be helpful to research the fintech apps for currency exchange since they may offer a better course than your bank and thus save you money.

4. Registrations

If you are going to Spain, it is most likely that you will need a NIE number, which stands for 'foreigners' identity number.In case you are coming to Tenerife, TJT will help you through the process.Another registartion in Spain is for social security number.This number gives you access to the Spanish security system as well as the health system.The social security number is a permanent registration and it would be helpful for people who are looking for going back to Spain for work in the future.However, if you are going in another country you better research how to register and it is a good idea to send an email to the city hall or your company so that you have the information from the horse's mouth and not stress after your arrival.Good luck!
