The introduction

Hello everyone, I hope, that you are all doing just fine!

In this article I want to tell you about this recipe, which I find it very easy and healthy and cheap. This is something, that we love in our family and everyone eats this dish with pleasure, though it’s not something fancy or anything like that. This is a bulgur from wheat, which is just ground in large pieces and not very small ones and it’s really delicious when prepared, however, it all depends on the methods, that you prepare it, I guess.

First of all, I must tell you , that it’s not that easy to buy the bulgur that you need for your dish. There are some places, where people know, that they will definitely find that bulgur there and those are mostly those Georgian bazaars, which are in certain places in Tbilisi. Well, I usually buy that wheat bulgur in Georgian bazaars and it’s this Varketili bazaar, where I usually buy the wheat bulgur for my dish. Well, you may think, that wheat bulgur is not expensive or something like that, however, I   must tell you, that it’s not very cheap either. It costs about 4 Laris a kilogramme, however, you can get a lot of wheat bulgur from one kilogramme of it. I usually have it divided into two and I have two portions of pretty large saucepan of prepared wheat bulgur that way.

Anyways, let me tell you about the preparation of this cheap and long-lasting dish, which they call it “Papa” in Georgia and it’s like “Porridge “ in English, however, it’s not like it’s the national name of the dish or something like that.

Ingredients:

  • Wheat bulgur, 500 grams
  • Water/milk, 3 litres
  • Butter, 20 grams
  • Salt to taste

Preparation process

  1. To tell you the truth, there are some different ways of how to prepare this wheat bulgur, however, they don’t really differ from each other. Only, there are some small things, which are added or skipped in those recipes for this dish.
  2. First of all, I wash the wheat bulgur. I didn’t wash it until just recently and I don’t think, that it needs washing, however, this time, when we bought some wheat bulgur ,it was not that good and it seemed like it had some pieces of plants or other things in it, so that it was impossible to take them out, because there are so many small things in the wheat bulgur, that you can’t really know, where you will find something other than that wheat pieces. That’s why I decided to have this one washed and some extra pieces would come out and would be floating on the top of the water and then I would just throw them away.
  3. After  washing the bulgur,  I had it in the saucepan and I just put it on gas on a high heat, so that it would get kind of cooked.  I added some oil to the wheat bulgur in the saucepan and that way I cooked it. You can even add some butter instead of oil.
  4. So, after some time of cooking, it was time to cook the wheat bulgur in the water. I had some water boiled into the electric kettle and I just added it to the cooking bulgur in the saucepan. They say, that the water should be double the amount of bulgur,. And some people like to cook the wheat bulgur in milk.
  5. I usually add some salt after adding the water or milk , because that way it will have a better taste.
  6. Wheat bulgur can be ready in just one hour and you will know when it’s ready, when it has absorbed all the water or milk, that was inside the saucepan. Some people just leave it like that and don’t stir, however, I usually stir it, because that way every small thing will get cooked.
  7. Then, you can taste it and see, whether it needs adding some salt or not. And if it doesn’t lack any salt, then it’s ready and you can serve it.
  8. People usually serve the wheat bulgur with some small piece of butter in the middle of the dish on a place or a small bowl , and when the dish is hot, the butter gets melted.
  9. You should know , that this dish is very good for the metabolism and the body.

So that, enjoy your cooking and prepare this wheat bulgur dish!
