Barcelona Part III
As I previously promised you all people, here it comes the third post about Barcelona.
The last post of the series, for you to have a better understanding of the beautiful Catalan city. Barcelona is situated on the north-east coast of the Iberian peninsula and it is one of the most beautiful city of Spain. Of course, it is a very touristic place in winter and also in summer, no weather exceptions will ever stop people from visiting Barcelona. And even if for you guys is more about party and food and beaches, Barcelona has a lot more to offer. Art, Gaudí, La Sagrada Familia, traditional food and folklore all around the city. The city is also very international and modern, therefore, it is a unique city, where no one can say they did not feel at home. Rarely happens.
Here you can find two more posts about Barcelona, one is about a general knowledge of the city: Barcelona Part I
And the second post is more about what to visit: Barcelona Part II
And now here a last and I must say a very small post about prices, where to sleep, where to eat and weather.
Let's start, then, shall we?
Prices
I am absolutely in love with Spain. Prices are generally very good and cheap, students won't struggle if they decide to spend their Erasmus in Spain. Important cities such as Madrid, are generally and obviously more expensive than other places, and so does Barcelona. But shockingly the price is still very affordable. To eat, to go out, to buy things, everything is very cheap. Of course, if you go to certain areas and certain shops you need to expect higher prices. Think about the many touristic areas, if you go to the shop and buy a shirt that says 'I love Barcelona', it might cost a little bit more than in others shops which are located in a less touristic area.
Generally, very good and you won't suffer famine.
Accommodation
Where to stay
I personally went to a very nice, unique and cheap hotel, which works as a hostel as well, in the same building. It is called: Hostel Generator and it is the best hostel/hotel I have been sleeping so far. I know that it is a chain that is spreading quite fast as it is a very awesome concept of how to live inside the hostel/hotel and also outside of it. The interior is funny and fresh, there is an area designed for hosts to relax and it is just perfect. I am now concentrating on the Generator that is located in Barcelona, so I won't say for sure that the others are exactly the same, however being a chain, it usually should try to offer the same idea of the place and therefore, I am assuming that the Generator hostels around the world are as cool as the one I have been to in Barcelona two years ago. Inside there are areas for you to chill with music, games, sofas, computers and a lot more.
At the entrance, people at the reception are always very outgoing and welcoming and also the place is divided into hostel and hotel. So you can opt either to sleep with friends and pay a little less for the hostel or to sleep alone on a double room and pay just a a little bit more for the hotel. Prices are very cheap and you also have the breakfast which is good quality and fair price. There are also two bars, one for the restaurant and therefore, you will be having your breakfast there in the morning and eating lunch and dinner if you opt for the all packet, ultimately; the bar is where you can chill and have a drink at night and meet people without having to go out at all. They also play music. The Generator in Barcelona it is also in a good area, near the Sagrada Familia and near the centre. Two minutes away, by walk you find this important street where you can see Casa Batlló and also a lot of places where you can eat typical tapas.
Gastronomy
Where to eat
Food is just amazing in Spain, but anywhere you go there will be a typical tapas that is not the same in other cities. I suggest to ask the hotel for some tips and eat in one of the more typical places you can find. I have been in a tapas bar in the main road, just in front Casa Batlló, where prices were a little more expensive, being a very touristic place, but the place was nice and the waiters very funny.
If you are near the beach, you definitely need to try fish as 'pescado' is a very Spanish thing you won't regret you have tried.
Finally, my favourite place is just few roads after the Generator Hostel and one of the guy at the reception suggested to go and pay a visit to this little restaurant called something with La Hormiga, but I am sure that if you mention it to the reception at the hostel they will be able to help you find the place.
Weather
What to bring
The weather in Spain is pretty good. What can I say? Of course, in winter is definitely not as good as in spring or summer, therefore, I always suggest to go in the period of summer to really and deeply enjoy every little pleasure that Barcelona offers.
I am a light traveler, I always leave with little, also because I believe that I would prefer to buy something there than bring old things from home. Bring a map guide, a language guide and few clothes, you don't need anything else. My check list, in fact, usually look like this:
- Passport
- Phone charger
- Phone
- Money
And I am ready to leave.
Enjoy your trip to Barcelona!
