When I was in elementary school, I went to my first Shakespeare play, "Twelfth Night". Ever since then, I have loved the rhythm of the scripts, the costumes, and the unique humor of these productions. Shakespeare did indeed give the world a beautiful gift in each of his creations!
Even in Atlanta, you can enjoy the beauty of these plays. The Shakespeare Tavern is located right downtown, across from Emory Hospital, in a building that casts a Globe-like feeling onto the very modern Atlanta street outside. Once through the doors, I walked down the stairs to the small lobby area, where they were selling funny souvenirs of Shakespeare's wittiest phrases and most comical insults. A full bar was open to enjoy while we waited in line for the theater to open 75 minutes before the start of the play. A short chat with one of the friendly volunteers made the wait pass quickly. Even though all of the guests buy tickets for a specific section of the theater, within that section the tables are first-come, first-serve. So, arriving early ended up being a great idea, as we had a very good choice of viewing locations within our section.
Going to a Shakespeare play at the Shakespeare Tavern was a full evening experience for us because we chose to eat on-location. The cafeteria-style dining has a wide array of pub-like options, and they even had vegan and vegetarian meal options marked on the menu (yay!). Once we chose our table, we headed back to the cafeteria line and the volunteers helped us order our food. In just a minute, it was all ready, and they helped us take it back to our table. During intermission, we were able to take advantage of the lovely desserts and drinks as well. I greatly enjoyed having a corn chowder, which was on the "small plates" menu but ended up being plenty of food for my dinner.
The play I went to see was "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The actors did an incredible job and had me laughing and smiling all throughout the play. Moth was one of my favorite characters, with his timid and comical antics. At one point at the end, Puck sprung up through a trap-door on the stage and I actually screamed a bit! I was entirely engulfed in the drama for the entirety of the production, and the wonderful atmosphere and the beautiful theater made it a very enjoyable evening. It was great to get to shake hands with the cast and chat with them on the way out of the theater. They were very friendly and I got to take a picture with Puck, Moth, and Cobweb. I will definitely be going back!
Taking an evening to really sit back and enjoy Shakespeare is an amazing way to relax and get your own creative juices flowing. Renew your artistic mind, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy the Shakespeare Tavern!
