Lions and tigers and bears...oh my!

When I was in elementary school, a typical summer week involved at least one visit to Zoo Atlanta. My mom knew the value of exposing us to science and new experiences, and we loved getting in the car to spend a day at the zoo.

Even as a university student and now young professional, I still find that Zoo Atlanta sparks my imagination and curiosity. I look at the different animals and wonder at how unique and creatively-designed they are. Taking time to spend at the zoo is a great way for me to get my creative juices flowing as I explore creatures that I don't get to see every day. In addition, this outdoor museum is a great way for me to spend some time in nature, even inside of a huge city.

Here are a few of my favorite things to see and do at Zoo Atlanta:

  1. Visit the gorilla exhibit. There are several viewing points to the gorilla habitat, but one of them gives you a nice seat on a bench (inside of an air-conditioned building), up close to the glass. From this point, I've been able to see gorillas closer than ever. Once when I was little, I had a very personal moment with a gorilla baby: we both sat on opposite sides of the glass, a mere inch apart, and made eye contact. We mimicked each other, our hands both on the glass. Now she is a big mommy gorilla in the same exhibit, and I have enjoyed watching her grow up as I have.
  2. Watch the giant pandas sleep. They are always sleeping! Zoo Atlanta is one of the only zoos to have giant pandas from China, and our mating pair has had over 5 cubs so far in Atlanta. The babies are usually on exhibit as well, and they balance carefully up on their jungle gym while they sleep. Sometimes, we watch as they fall off - whoops! But they always bounce back, those sleepy-eyed furballs.
  3. Creep around the new reptile exhibit. Turtles are one of the most interesting animals alive, in my humble opinion. On a recent visit, I watched as a few flat turtles nose-dove into the sand and buried themselves until they weren't visible (except for the tiny holes their noses made). The reptile house also has snakes and frogs. I might not like seeing snakes in-person, but it's a whole different story when they are behind glass.
  4. Visit the bird show! On a recent visit to the zoo, I got to be a volunteer during the show and have a toucan land on my arm. It was an amazing experience. The bird show often has birds fly right over your head, and it is very educational.

Atlanta is blessed to having many great attractions and fun experiences for locals and visitors to take part in. Zoo Atlanta is especially interactive and great for adults and kids alike. Enjoy!
