Going Out in Liège

In this article I'm going to tell you how to go on a night out in Liège including which places you should go to.

We generally eat dinner in a restaurant in the city and go for a drink in a café before going to the square, or we'll sometimes go round someone's apartment and have an aperitif before going to the square just before midnight.

The Square

The square is located right in the centre of Liège, next to the cathedral. The square has narrow streets round it full of bars where students go to drink and dance. There are also some restaurants, particularly pizzerias and kebab shops, but I recommend going to the Greek restaurant you'll find there. There are many bars in the square and they all have their own particular characteristics.

I recommend the Far-West Bar as there are generally fewer people in there than in other bars so there are more places to sit down, which is just what you want sometimes. As you may have guessed by its name (for those that speak French, or are just good at guessing), the bar is Wild West themed. There are horse saddles as chairs, and the bar is decorated with prison bars and wanted posters, etc. You should get a bottle of 'ruée vers l'or' and all the other bottled drinks they offer. But these are shots, so don't go wild! They mostly play rock music and people dance half the time.

You also have the bar 'Point de Vue'. Its facade is decorated with cardboard houses. It's an Erasmus bar therefore there are a lot of foreign people- you'll hear every language imaginable! Also, the music is good.

There's the L'Aller Simple which is a Philosophy and Arts bar. I do recommend it, but I can't really explain why. Depending on who's serving, the prices change, which is annoying sometimes and the music also changes, according to the playlists that are put up. However, there's normally a section that plays a lot of folk music which is where we don't go because it's quite heavy (colémara genre). There's a dartboard and the Art Deco isn't bad.

The Géographique Café is a nice bar with a dartboard, cheap drinks, cool music and you can request songs- the staff are pretty attentive. I recommend it. Especially for starting the night off because there aren't too many people there and there are tables outside at the front where you can sit.

University Evenings

The university evenings generally take place in the square or La Cour Saint-Jean for the Engineering students, which is easy to get to from the Philosophy and Arts department. Sometimes, there are also evenings organised in rooms provided at Palais des Congrès near the Parc de la Boverie. The room's great and big. I recommend the History evenings as there's always a great atmosphere.

Evening Concerts

Occasionally, there are also evening concerts from time to time organised at Le Pot au Lait on Rue Soeurs-de-Hasque. It's an extravagantly decorated place which serves unique, cheap beer. Also, there are concerts put on at L'Escalier Café in the square and at the Caserne Fonck for the bigger, more important concerts. A little concert is always nice!
