Erasmus Experience in Wroclaw, Poland by István
Why did you choose to go to Wroclaw, Poland?
I wanted to go Poland (that was the whole reason why I signed in to Erasmus) and I can only choosed from two polish universities where I can go. I choosed Wrocław because I heard this is the nicest polish city. I think I made a good bet.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I only singed for one semester. The scholarship was almost enough, but in the last month I need a little help from home.
What is the student lifestyle like in Wroclaw?
For students the city is great. Similar to my home university's city, Szeged. It's full of young people and because of the polish cities built around the marketplace (Rynek in polish), that node is always full of life. Most clubs near to Rynek also.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Wroclaw to other students?
ABSOLUTELY! My video about Wro:
What is the food like?
Polish food is not so tasty just like Hungarian food, but if you wan't some hot, spicy food, you can find some restaurants that also has it. Honestly, from scholarship we didn't eated too much in restaurants... Everyone mostly made his home food in the dormitory that he liked, if there were enough ingredients.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Wroclaw?
No, it was easy. I arrived with train from Kraków and I already had Hungarian contact in the city who helped me to find my dormitory and speak with the janitor. But if she weren't available that time, I made map at home with bus routes, google mapses, etc. I planned everything. I think this is the best if you plan everything and you making Plan A, B, C, D. I'm just not the person who go somewhere and "okay, I arrived, now let's find that thing somehow".
How much does it cost to live in Wroclaw?
The costs are totally similar to the Hungarian one, but the life standard a little bit higher. It was easy for me, because the bread, butter, etc. have the same prices. I know how much this will cost for me in a month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?
Polish language courses was available in the university. For me, as a non-slavic speaker it was impossible to learn. My spanish neighbours thought I will speak fluently after few months soon, because I live in Central-Europe. I told them your language is more near to Polish than mine. On the lessons the communication was on English. In the shops, street, etc., we communicated with hands. It's always work.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Wroclaw from your city?
I choosed the hardest, longest and the cheapest way:
- Car from my home to Budapest bus station (Start: 4:50).
- From here bus through Slovakia to Kraków (6:00).
- From Kraków train to Wrocław (15:00).
- Arriwing in Wrocław (21:00-22:00).
It's not the easiest: it's the cheapest and only option.
There is a train from Budapest to Kraków, but it's a little bit longer, but much comfortable. In the last year also there are plane flights to Katowice or Warszawa. But in this case, you need to go somehow from the airport to the bus/train station. In Kraków, the train station is built together with the bus station.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Wroclaw?
I recommend you Rynek.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Wroclaw?
We were in a few with my neighbours, but I don't remember the names. Sorry.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
You can visit the old city center.
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Wroclaw?
Go on summer! There are also parties on winter, but for summer you don't need to carry winter clothes in your luggage. Less weight.
