Transportation in Warsaw
Ticket Machines
On my first day in Warsaw I couldn´t use any form of transportation because my baggage was too heavy. I arrived at my dormitory in a taxi because I didn´t know how to get a ticket for the bus. After that I realized that transportation in Warsaw was very easy and cheap. I can even say that I had more difficulties than that in my own country to buy a ticket.
Usually there's a ticket machine close to the bus and subway stations, and there is always one in a subway station. You can even find these machines on the buses and trams, which I haven´t seen in any other European cities. These machines have language options in Polish, English, German and Russian.
Besides that, something that was really surprsing for me was buying tickets with any credit card, bank card, or cash, or even small change. What's even more easy, is if you have "paypass" feature in your card you can get your ticket very quickly, which is a lifesaver when you're in hurry.
You have three ticket options:
- 20 minutes
- 75 and 90 min, only available once
- Short-term
Ticket fees are depending on how many minutes you use it for, the zone and whether you have a discount card or not.
Note: if you're planning to get a discount card you have to have your student ID with you, which is valid all over Poland.
Also you can top up your phones with credit on these machines.
Accomodation
In Warsaw there are two zones, and when you are getting tickets you have Zone 1 and Zone 1+2. I only used Zone 1 because this zone connects all of Warsaw. Zone 2 allows you to travel to the suburban regions further away. But, if you buy a discount ticket you should stick to Zone 1.
The tickets are only valid from the moment the tickets are bought on the bus, and there is no need to validate them anywhere.
How to use the tickets?
If you didn´t buy your ticket on the bus or tram then you should use the little yellow machines on them.
