Erasmus Experience in Warsaw, Poland by Merve
Why did you choose to go to Warsaw, Poland?
I had options like Spain and Germany too. But the school in Spain were giving the classes in Spanish and I don't know Spanish. And Germany is more complicated with the paper work and everything and it is more expensive than Poland. So here I am.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship is for 5 months. I receive €300 for per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Warsaw?
Warsaw is a cheap city but also there are discounts for students. Every student can find things in their interests.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Warsaw to other students?
Warsaw is not the best city in Poland, I should admit that. But it is big and has opportunities because it is the capital city. It is calm, clean, nice and safe. I'm not a student at Warsaw University, I'm a student at SWPS and highly recommend the school if you want to learn something. You have no privilege for being a Erasmus student here. You have to come classes and do the all homework just like regular students which is good for me.
What is the food like?
Polish people use a lot of potatoes and they have that famous pierogi which you can have different ways. It is good but there are a lot of restaurants from all cultures. You can find something to eat every time.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Warsaw?
I find my accommodation place with a company which is Pepehousing. Every student should check it, they are so helpful and kind. You pay for them for the contract but it is not much. It changes for every place.
How much does it cost to live in Warsaw?
It changes for every person I guess. If you go out ever night and every day of course it will cost much. But for example rents are around 800-1000 zloty, transportation is 55 zloty for students, and you can buy food for one month with 500-600 zloty I guess.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I found Polish so hard to learn and pronounce. There is Polish course in my school, yes. But I didn't attend.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Warsaw from your city?
I came from Istanbul to Warsaw by plane. It costed 400 lira. You should check Ukraine Int Airlines. I guess it is the cheapest one.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Warsaw?
Pawilony! It is in the centrum and there are a lot of good pubs.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Warsaw?
If you want to taste polish food, Zapiecek is the best one in town I guess. They are all over the city.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Warsaw in the future?
Beware of the cold guys! It is so cold! Bring all your warm clothes! It is cold!
