Erasmus experience in Warsaw, Poland - by Guido

Why did you decide to go to Warsaw, Poland?

Because it's a growing European capital, with a large and young population and lots of fun places to go. It's also considerably cheaper than Italy. The University I went to (The University of Warsaw) is right in the centre of the city and offers a great variety of English language exams.

What is student life like in Warsaw?

Fantastic! There are loads of young people, loads of pubs, bars, clubs, disco-pubs, restaurants and lots that are specifically for Erasmus students.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Warsaw to other students?

Yes, absolutely! Don't believe what people say about Poland and don't worry too much about the cold... I'd go back there in a heartbeat. It's impossible to have a bad time or get bored in Warsaw.

How was the food in Poland?

Better than you can imagine! Lots of soups during the winter, and lots of Italians loved the pierogi.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Warsaw?

Not really, and anyway it's very cheap.

How much does it cost to live in Warsaw?

I lived right in the centre, 100 metres from Centrum and I paid about 300 euro.

How was the language? Did you go to any university classes?

Polish is really difficult to learn, especially for 'mediterraneans' like Italian and Spanish people, but it's not impossible. And anyway, lots of people speak great English. I went to a free Polish language course offered by the university (useful to learn a few polite phrases), but anyway all of my courses were in English.

What's the cheapest way to get to Warsaw from your city?

By plane.

Where would you recommend to go out in Warsaw?

Here's a list of great places:

  • Plan B,
  • Remont,
  • Park,
  • Kafefajka,
  • Jerozolima.

And to eat? Can you tell us about your favourite places?

The Czech restaurant on Plac Konstytucji because it's brilliant, you get lots of food and it's really cheap.

And cultural places to visit?

The old city, the royal street, the banks of the Vistola during the warmer seasons, Lazienki park (lovely all year round during all the seasons), the Insurrection Museum.

What advice would you give to future Erasmus students going to Warsaw?

No advice, just to enjoy yourselves in Warsaw, it's stayed in my heart...
