Erasmus experience in Varsovia, Maria's Poland

Why did you choose to go to Varsovia, Poland?

For the price, for all of the places there is to visit and how easy it is to travel to the rest of Europe.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help with living costs?

I was there during second semestre of the course from February to June. The total grant was 1000 € (only to use for the rent).

What is the student atmosphere like in Varsovia?

It's a really big city and there are lots of Erasmus students from all countries, European and the rest of the world.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Varsovia to other students?

Of course, all the classes that I had (10 subjects) were in English. The city offers many things to do and the university is rated well at European level.

What is the food like?

So good. If you more or less like everything, the traditional food is really good, and best of all, the prices are laughable. You can eat for 2 or 3€.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Varsovia?

No. Before going to Varsovia the university assigned me a mentor who helped us with everything they could. We arrived in Varsovia the 5th of February and by the 8th we had a flat. During these 3 days we viewed 4 flats. There are many student flats available.

How much does it cost to live in Varsovia?

Less than Spain, 4 times less to be exact.

How did you find the language? Did you do a course at university?

The language was no problem. After 6 months there I learnt some Polish words, but with English you can understand people anywhere. I didn't have the opportunity to do a Polish course in 2nd semestre (they offered it in 1st semestre).

What is the most economic way of getting to Varsovia from your city?

I think the only way is by plane. It is quite far from Spain, so I don't think it is possible by any other form of transport. Normally there are cheap flights to Croatia, and from there you can get the train or polskibus to Varsovia.

What places would you recommend for a night out?

There are so many bars and pubs: Remont, Medik, Opera, etc...

Where is there to eat in Varsovia? Can you recommend your favourite places?

Sphinx! Browarnia, the price of Subway and McDonalds, any place with traditional food, the dairies...

Cultural places to visit?

The Palace of Culture, of course. The Old Town in general (stare miasto), Lazienki park...

Any advice you want to give for future students in Varsovia?

It's a big and beautiful city. The climate is quite dreadful... but you will get used to it. Life there is 4 times cheaper than here, since they don't have the euro. I hope you all have an experience as good as I had!
