My Experience in Vilnius, Lithuania. By Beatriz

What's it like livinh in Vilnius? Would you recommend it? What's the city like?

The city is beautiful and peaceful, not too big. It has everything a student needs to be happy!

What is the student environment like in Vilnius?

Not that lively, but nice. There is always more enthusiasm amongst Erasmus students. This is because there are several events that schools, discos or private companies provide for these students.

On average, how much did you spend living in Vilnius?

Per month, about €300. For the residence I paid about €100, for food about €150 and then other expenses such as transportation, leisure, etc.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Vilnius? Do you have any advice you can give?

No. You can join groups on Facebook and search for accommodation. It's a good start. After having been there a bit and having met local people, it will be much easier, because they can tell you about family or friends who are renting houses / rooms.

How's the food? What are your favorite delicacies?

Great! But most dishes are not very healthy. The basis of Lithuanian food is potatoes and legumes. Mashed potatoes, potato "cepelinai", are very common. Beetroot, too. Fried bread is one of my favorite snacks. Here they eat a lot of dried meat and sausages to accompany such amazing beer! I haven't yet tasted a dish that I don't like!

Which local places would you recommend to visit in Vilnius?

Many! You must not miss the local markets like Kalvariju Turgus on the outskirts, the Bernardine Garden, the high street - Gedimino. The museum of genocide victims, the Contemporary Art Centre, Trakai, in the vicinity. This place is a must see!

What's the quality of the restaurants like in Vilnius? Can you tell us which are the best restaurants?

There are several at various prices. I personally like the restaurants that serve typical Lithuanian food, there are loads of them everywhere.

What is the nightlife in Vilnius like? What are the best places?

It's cool. Most nightclubs are pubs, not nightclubs. I personally prefer it. Discos are very well known amongst Erasmus students: Salento. You also have Exit.

What advice would you give to future students going to Vilnius?

Bring warm clothes and forget the rags!
