A perfect place
For me living in Vilnius was and still is the best time of my life!
Ok, so the weather is not so stable and it's really cold in the winter, but it pays off! The prices in Lithuania are very low (from my point of view), which ensures great parties. My favourite clubs are "Tarantino" and "Havana". "Universiteto" is also good. "Prospekto", which was very popular with the Erasmus students of our first semester, wasn't that appealing for us.
Traveling around Lithuania is very cheap and you have some great places you can visit, like: Trakai, Klaipeda, Palanga, Šiaulai and Hill of Crosses, the National Park, Druskininkai... Lithuania is also a good exit point for other countries, for example Latvia (Riga is beautiful), Estonia and the northern countries (Finland, Sweden... ), Russia (you can apply for visa at the Vilnius bus station in a turist agency on the 1st floor), Belarus and so on.
Lihuanian, for me, was a little bit of a schock, but I got used to it. They use a lot of sour cream and butter, so girls be careful (all of us gained a few kilos). I usually eat in the University cantine, where the food is very cheap and quite good. On the weekends we cooked in the dorm.
And that leads me to the dorm... Student house on Didlaukio Gatve. Hmm... a total schock, but you get used to it. The rooms are quite OK, but the showers need a lot of getting used to it. But it became home.
The Mykolo Romerio University is great! Very good teachers and useful courses. Specially Basic Lithuanian with doc. dr. Violeta Janulevičienė.
For those of us who like to excercise and stay "in shape" (as much as you can on Erasmus) there's a great gym on Laisvės pr. 82, called Super Gym. The prices are good (95 litas for whole month including weekends) and the staff is really nice! They have running tracks, steppers, fitness equipment, aerobics and so on. To get to the gym just take bus number 48 or 55 from Mykolo Romerio bus station to Poliklinika bus station (in direction of Šeškine).
To get around Vilnius buses and trams are really cheap - 22 litas per month for both (with student ID card). And you can use this web page to find your way. The only downside to the buses is that they are not very regular.
As for shopping - if you live at Didlaukio Gatve you have Iki near by, which is very convenient but not that big. For bigger grocery shoppings Rimi at Mandarinas center is better (sometimes even cheaper). You also have Akropolis shopping center close and Ozas shopping center. In Akropolis, in Maxima store, you can buy lots of useful stuff you need at arrival (and they're really cheap - like towels, bed linens, glasses and plates etc. ).
For eating "Čili Pica" is great! Cheap and good food, not very traditional, but still very useful when you're too lazy to cook. "Can Can pica" is also good. We also liked "Forto Dvaras" where you can get traditional Lithuanian food (you can find it in Vilnius old town, on Pilies gatve). Oh, and you have to try their fried bread! Deliciuos!
For leisure time "Alus Namai" (beer house) is great, but a little dark. When the sun is shining go to the river bank beside the White bridge and enjoy the sun (it's also called Vilnius beach) or to the Užupio kavine in Užupis. Also enjoy some homemade beer on Totorių gatvė.
