Experience in Vilnius, Lithuania, by Marina
Why did you choose to go to Vilnius, Lithuania?
I wanted to go to a different country, to live in a country that I have never seen anything like before.
How long did the scholarship last? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship lasts 9 months and we still don't know exactly what we're going to receive. Europe will pay €115 per month and the Autonomous Community, which in my case is Andalusia, will pay €11 per month. We still don't know what we will receive from the Ministry.
What is the student lifestyle like in Vilnius?
Very good, there are really good vibes with all the students that live here. But the truth is, I didn't expect there to be so many Erasmus students here.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Vilnius to other students?
Of course, the city is really cool, and it's very cheap to live here. In the University, they have everything. They have the same subjects as the ones you have to do in Spain, and others that are VERY achievable, but it all depends on the professor.
What is the food like there?
It's definitely the worst in Lithuania. The traditional food doesn't taste of anything so it's better that you know how to cook the food you like for yourself.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Vilnius?
No, it was very easy. My university, Mykolas Romeris, made it very easy for me to find accommodation. I have to say that the halls of residence, on the first day you arrive, you will think that's it's the worst. Everything seems disgusting but as the days go by and you start to decorate your room, it'll look like a different place. A lot more welcoming, and now I don't even think about living in a different place. There are great vibes there and you have the opportunity to meet people of many different nationalities.
How much does it cost to live in Vilnius?
To live here it's very cheap in general. The halls of residence cost around €60 per month, with all of the extra bills included. Both eating out and the public transport are very cheap. However, it's better to buy your clothes in Spain because it's quite expensive here.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Lithuanian is impossible. I definitely didn't go to any course to learn it, but it's my pending course for this term.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Vilnius from your city?
Getting here is expensive, as there are only direct flights from Barcelona. The cheapest connections from Málaga are: Málaga-Brussels-Vilnius, Málaga-Oslo-Vilnius, Málaga-London-Vilnius.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Vilnius?
The most typical places are Salento and Cocain for Erasmus students.
Is it good to eat out in Vilnius? What are some of your favourite places to go?
It's difficult for me to pick one, there are very good places to eat in!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The city is very pretty, although very Soviet. What I like the most is to walk through the city and look at the huge trees they have in the middle of the city. There are a lot of places to visit, although I would recommend you do the first visits as soon as you start your year abroad because when it gets dark at 5pm you can't go anywhere.
What advice would you give future students heading to Vilnius?
Don't doubt it, it's an enchanting city. The people are a little bit boring at the beginning, but they will get more affectionate. It's a totally recommendable destination.
