Experience in Vilnius, Lithuania by Maria
What is it like to live in Vilnius? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I've lived in Vilnius my whole life. It's a good and clean city. But there are people here who don't like foreigners. There is discrimination based on your race, on the colour of your skin or your religion.
And it's cold a lot of the time.
What is the student lifestyle like in Vilnius?
There are foreign students, but not many of them. I saw some at the University of Vilnius, but they were very few.
How much does it cost to live in Vilnius?
Approximately €500 a month. But each person has their own needs, those who have the money can spend more on their flat, leisure activities, etc.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Vilnius? Do you have any advice?
You have to look for accommodation online. There are some websites with advertisements for accommodation, for example: www.aruodas.lt
What is the food like there? What are some of your favourite dishes?
They eat a lot of potato and meat here. But there are a lot of different products sold in the supermarkets, I found that the best thing to do is to cook the food you like at home. It's cheaper and better for your health.
Where would you recommend to visit in Vilnius?
- Belmontas (waterfalls)
- The Old Town
- Bernardinu Park
- Vingis Park
- TV tower
- Vingis cinema
And to eat in Vilnius? What are some of your favourite places to go?
Cancan pizza, Katpedele (Lithuanian cooking), Fortas.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Vilnius?
There are a lot of clubs and pubs, etc.
Do you have any advice for future students in Vilnius?
You'll need to buy coats for the winter because it's cold and it snows in January and February. Everyone speaks Lithuanian here and almost everyone knows English, too. Hardly anyone speaks Spanish.
